dc.description.abstractThe present investigation was undertaken to estimate variability, genetical parameters, genotypic and phenotypic correlations as well as direct and Indirect effect of different characters on green fodder yield in cowpea. The experiment was conducted at the Forage Research Farm, Gujarat Agricultural University, Anand Campus, Anand during kharif 1990. The experimental material comprised of 36 true breeding genotypes. The experiment was conducted in 6 X 6 simple lattice design with four replications. Eleven yield contributing characters were studied. The analysis of variance showed significant differences for all the traits. Considering variability and heritabiIity, high genetic gain could be achieved for number of branches, stem weight, leaf weight, green fodder yield, dry matter yield and crude protein yield. While in case of days to 50 per cent flowering, number of nodes, plant height, plant width and leaf stem ratio, moderate expected genetic gain could be achieved. Among 55 genotypic correlation coefficients, seven were not significant, similarly nine out of 55 phenotypic correlation coefficients were not significant. The yield contributing characters, viz., number of branches, number of nodes, plant height, plant width, stem weight, leaf weight and crude protein yield were found positively associated with green fodder yield and dry matter yield. Path analysis revealed that for Improving green fodder yield, selection pressure should be exerted through leaf-weight followed by stem weight. Thus for further improvement through hybridization the parents" having high leaf as well stew weight should be used.en_US
