Sweet sorghum production is affected by a wide range of biotic constraints, of which shootfly (Atharigona soccata) is the most important pest, which severely damages sweet sorghum crop during the seedling stage. Host plant resistance is one of the major components to control shootfly. To understand the nature of gene action for inheritance of shootfly resistance and juice yield, its component traits in sweet sorghum, we carried out the present experiment, entitled, “Inheritance of shootfly resistance in sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]”, in six basic generations, namely, P1, P2, F1, F2, B1 and B2’s of three crosses viz., SSV-84 x IS 18360, RSSV-269 x RSSV-260 and RSSV-493 x RSSV-167 during 2017. The six generations mean values of all three crosses indicated that, the F1 means were higher than mid parental mean values and comparable to better parent mean values in significant direction in respects of all the traits in present investigation, except days to 50% flowering and days to maturity, which indicated both partial or over dominance. The F2 means were estimated lower than the F1 mean values in all three crosses. The mean of backcross populations tended towards their respective parents. These result indicated the predominance of non-additive gene action which includes both dominance as well as epistatic interactions.en_US
