dc.description.abstractInvestigation on “Genetic variability studies in early generation populations derived from commercial hybrids of ridge gourd (Luffa acutangula L.) was conducted in the field of Vegetable Science at College of Horticulture, Bagalkot. Two F2 populations derived from Naga and NS-3 hybrids were evaluated during summer 2018. Difference among two population variances was observed for all the characters studied indicating the higher magnitude of variability in F2 populations. High genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation were observed for node to first female flowering, node to first male flowering and fruit yield per plant in both the populations. The high heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent over mean were observed for vine length at 60 days after planting, days to first male flowering, days to first male flowering, node to first female flowering, average fruit weight, TSS and vit-C in the F2 populations of both the hybrids. Additive inheritance is predominant in these characters. Thus there is ample scope for improvement of these characters through simple selection. Significant positive correlation for fruit yield per plant with number of fr uits per vine, average fruit weight, fruit length and fruit diameter were noticed. These traits also had high positive direct association with fruit yield per plant. Hence, direct selection of these traits would be more useful in the improvement of fruit yield per plant. Based on number of fruits and high fruit yield per plant the plant numbers 7, 9, 26, 29, 30, 31, 122, 123,137 and 187 in Naga F2 population, plant numbers 2, 4, 5,44 ,47 ,80 ,93 ,132 ,187 and 199 in NS-3 F2 populations were selected for further improvement.en_US
