Abstract
Maize is an important cross pollinated cereal crop belong to
family Poaceae. Due to wide genetic diversity, it has great untapped
genetic potential for improvement as and when need arises. The
present investigation entitled “Heterosis and combining ability
studies in diallel crosses of maize (Zea mays L.)” which comprised
of 21 single cross hybrids developed by half-diallel mating design
involving 7 parents and 2 standard checks viz., (Gujarat Maize-3 and
HQPM-1). The experiment was laid out in randomized block design
with three replications at Agronomy farm, B. A. College of Agriculture,
Anand Agricultural University, Anand during rabi season 2012-13.
Heterosis, combining ability and components of genetic variance were
studied for 13 characters viz; days to 50% tasselling, days to 50%
silking, plant height, ear height, days to 75% dry husk, ear length, ear
girth, number of grain rows per ear, number of grains per row, 100-
kernel weight, grain yield per plant, shelling percentage and protein
content.
