Effect of rhizome size and growth regulators on growth, yield and quality of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.)

| dc.description.abstract | Field investigation entitled “Effect of rhizome size and growth regulators on growth, yield and quality of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.)” was carried out during 2013-14 at Students’ Research Farm, Department of Agronomy, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. The experiment with 15 treatments comprised combination of three types of planting material viz. mother rhizomes, primary rhizomes, secondary rhizomes and five types of dipping treatments viz. GA3 (50 ppm), NAA (40 ppm), Kinetin (30 ppm), water soaked and control was laid out in factorial randomized block design with three replications on loamy sand soil with low in organic carbon and available nitrogen, medium in available phosphorus and potassium. Mother rhizomes as planting material gave higher emergence count, maximum plant height, dry matter accumulation and leaf area at all crop growth stages. Mother rhizomes as planting material, gave significantly higher yield as compare to primary rhizomes, similarly primary rhizomes gave significantly higher yield as compare to secondary rhizomes. Among different growth regulators, NAA (40 ppm), Kinetin (30 ppm), water soaked and control treatments were at par but significantly better than GA3 (50 ppm) in emergence count, plant height, leaf area, dry matter accumulation, weight of mother , primary and secondary rhizomes and number of tillers. The result also showed that fresh, dry and processed yield was statistically at par in NAA (40 ppm) and water soaked treatment. Quality parameters including curcumin content and oil content were non-significant in both factors viz. types of planting material and different growth regulators. | en_US |
