Abstract
The present investigation, “Effect of different grasses and spacing on turfing” was carried out in the experimental orchard of Department of Horticulture, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar during 2011-12 on three turfgrasses viz. ‘Selection No. 1’, ‘Calcutta Doob’and ‘Local Doob’ planted at three different spacing (7.5cmX7.5cm, 10cmX10cm and 15cmX15cm) to find out suitable grasses and spacing for good turfing. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications and plot size of 1.5X2.25 sq m. The observations were recorded on fresh weight of grasses, dry weight of grasses, density of turf, colour of turf, appearance of turf, leaf length, quality of turf, chlorophyll, carotenoids and nitrogen content. Minimum fresh weight of grasses required for planting was recorded in Selection No. 1 at wider spacing. Maximum density of turf was observed in Selection No. 1 at a spacing S 1(7.5cmX7.5cm). Colour of turf dark green was recorded in Calcutta Doob. Variation in turf colour was observed at seventy five and ninety days after transplanting. Very good appearance was observed in Selection No. 1 at a spacing S 1 (7.5cmX7.5cm). Highest root density was recorded in Local Doob. Minimum weed intensity was observed in plots of Selection No. 1 at spacing 7.5cm. Maximum dry weight was recorded in Selection No 1. Highest chlorophyll content was recorded in Local Doob. Hence based on the above described parameters, scores were allotted to each varieties was worked out accordingly. Selection No.1 was graded as ‘A’, Calcutta Doob graded as ‘B’ and Local Doob was graded as ‘C’ and in Spacing S 1(7.5cmX7.5cm) was the best for establish very fast and very good turfing.
