Educational and occupational aspirations of under-graduate agriculture students in Haryana

Abstract
The present study was conducted on 188 under-graduate Agriculture students of CCS Haryana Agricultural University during 2012-2013 to know the socio-economic and academic profile of the students, to study the educational and occupational aspirations of the students and to identify the socio-economic factors and academic environment affecting the aspirations of the students. Majority of the students had planned to go for higher studies (78.72 %) and among these, 79.72 per cent of them planned to join M.Sc. Agriculture followed by Ph. D. Agriculture (12.25%) and MBA (7.42%). Because they wanted to become economically independent in future due to better career (60.14%), whereas 29.05 per cent of them wanted to secure their future life due to any emergency/mishappening. Less than one-fourth of respondents (21.28%) wanted to join any job just after completion of B.Sc. Agriculture. Relative percentage of the respondents from general castes (95.51%), nuclear families (83.33%) with rural (79.03%) & urban orientation (78.13%), whose fathers & mothers illiterate (100% & 71.40% respectively) obtaining 6.50 to 6.99 (2nd class) and 7.00 to 8.49 (1st class) OGPA out of 10.00 points (86.57% and 75.22% respectively) aspiring for further higher studies was found to be highest. Caste, family type and occupation of respondents’ mother were found to be highly significantly associated with their future plan (χ2 = 25.52**, χ2= 7.708** and χ2=59.22** respectively) at 1% level of probability. All of the total respondents were aspiring for a job due to economic motivation & for better standard of living. Regarding nature of job, students preferred research job most (1.641) followed by administrative (1.382), extension (1.226), teaching (1.224), banking (1.178), defense service (1.155), social service (.738), clerical (.32) and household (ooo) due to personal interest, better pay & remunerations. Most preferred agency of job was central government (1.682) followed by state government (1.339). Preferences for other agencies were much lower i.e. own business organization (.851) and international agency (0.814). Private firm was least preferred by the students followed by voluntary agency (006). Higher pay and remunerations was the main reason for preferred that agency of job(47.34%) followed by secure job /assured job security (34.57%). Home state followed by home district & nearby home village were highly preferred places of jobs. Anywhere in the world followed by neighbouring country were least preferred places of job by the students. Near to home (72.34%) and safe & secure place (20.21%) were the main reasons. Preference for village was found to be lowest and city (1.004) was highly preferred place of residence followed by metropolitan city (.853) and town (.557). Provision of all facilities was one of the main reasons (55.32%) followed by neat & clean place (26.06%).
