The present investigation was undertaken during August 2013-September 2015 at K.R.C. College of Horticulture, Arabhavi with two field experiments and one laboratory experiment. In experiment-I, Genetic variability for productivity traits, association of yield with other yield components and path analysis was studied. High PCV and GCV were recorded for pod width, pod weight and number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod. High heritability and high GAM was recorded for most of growth and yield parameters like plant height at 60 DAS, number of branches per plant at 60 DAS, pod length and number of seeds per pod, indicating that these characters are controlled by additive gene action and direct selection from the RIL’s for these traits is favourable. The genotypic correlation studies revealed highly significant and positive association of green pod yield with plant height at 30 DAS and 60 DAS, number of branches at 30 DAS and 60 DAS, number of pods per plant and pod length. The genotypic path analysis revealed that only number of branches per plant at 60 DAS and pod length were the most influencing factors as these two traits have strong positive and direct effect on green pod yield per plant. In experiment-II, molecular characterization of 41 RILs (F7) of French bean was carried out by 15 RAPD primers. The percentage of polymorphic bands produced by the primers ranged from 32.2 to 100 %. Dendrogram revealed two major clusters. The genotypes G1 and G16 were distantly related, which can be used for further improvement of French bean. In experiment-III, nine superior performing genotypes identified from experiment-I were evaluated in four different environments during 2014-2015 to determine the stability for growth, earliness and yield characters in F6 generation. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the genotypes for all the traits studied. Considering all the parameters, Line 6-1 (Arka Suvida x Arbhavi Local) and Line 5-3 (Arka Suvida x Gokak Local) having bi > 1, i = 0 and non-significant deviation from regression found to be stable genotypes for favourable environment.en_US
