Punjab, the state in the north-west region of India, is passing through a critical situation where the ground water level is considerably decreasing. Besides, the rise in population is also a major concern for the state. The region is termed as ‘Bread basket of India’ that makes agriculture the main occupation of the population. But, the increase in population is forcing people to shift from the villages and look for new opportunities in the cities that are putting pressure on the land around the cities. Keeping these views, this study has been undertaken to evaluate the water demand due to urbanization from year 2007 to 2018 in the villages on the periphery of Ludhiana city along its major roads viz. Jhanda (Ferozpur road), Phullanwal (Pakhowal road), Ranian (Malerkotla road), Khakat (Delhi road), Mangli Uchi (Chandigarh road), Kakka (Rahon road), Rajpura Dogran (Jalandhar road) and Balloke (Hambran road). Foremost, Land use/ Land cover (LU/LC) maps are prepared of the study areas using visual interpretation by on screen digitization. Historical high resolution images for the required years are extracted from Google Earth. From the LU/LC maps, it is evident that the agricultural land of the villages has turned into built-up. Finally, water demand has been assessed based on urban water demand that depends on population and agriculture water demand based on the area under different crops grown in Rabi and Kharif season. Study reveals that urbanization takes place at the rate of 3.6 to 17.1% with decrease in water demand except in Balloke and Phullanwal village where water demand went upen_US
