Abstract
A field experiment entitled ―Nitrogen management in direct seeded basmati rice through green manuring, farm yard manure and nitrogen fertilization and its effect on succeeding wheat crop‖ was carried out at Research Farm, PAU Regional Research Station, Gurdaspur during kharif 2020 and rabi 2020-21. The experiment was conducted in split-split plot design with three organic fertilizers in main plots, three nitrogen doses in sub plots and three nitrogen application stages in sub-sub plots. Application of FYM @ 15 t ha-1 and GM before sowing of DSBR significantly increased different growth parameters viz. plant height, number of tillers and dry matter accumulation as well as yield attributes viz. effective tillers, panicle length and grains per panicle over control. Application of FYM @ 15 t ha-1, sunnhemp as green manure resulted in 19.7 % and 17 % higher grain yield of DSBR over control. They also improved the quality characters of basmati rice like hulling, milling and head rice recoveries. Among the various nitrogen doses, the application of 100% recommended dose of nitrogen recorded significantly higher values of various growth parameters and yield attributes and yield over application of 50% recommended nitrogen and control. The application of 100% recommended nitrogen dose recorded 30.8% higher grain yield of DSBR over control. The various nitrogen application stages failed to significantly influence any of the growth or yield parameters. Application of FYM @ 15 t ha-1 and green manuring with sunnhemp before sowing of basmati rice had beneficial residual effect on succeeding wheat crop and gave 10.7 % and 6.6 % higher grain yield respectively over control. The various treatments had nonsignificant effect on the soil fertility status after harvest of direct seeded basmati rice and wheat crop.
