Abstract
Pineapple {Ananus comosus) belongs to the family of Bromeliaceae.
Pineapple is popularly known as “queen of fruits” because of excellent flavour, taste
and shape of fruit, it is very delicious tropical crop. It is a wholesome fruit and one of
the most important commercial fruit crop of the world and also available throughout
the year.
The total global production of pineapple is estimated as 1,420,400
thousand tonnes during 2012. India ranks third in area and sixth in production in the
world with an area of 6.98 million ha and production of 81.28 million tonnes during
2012-13, With an annual production of 106.8 thousand tonnes (Anonymous, 2009),
Meghalaya ranks fifth in pineapple production after West Bengal, Assam, Karnataka,
and Bihar. Pineapple occupied an area of 10.6 thousand ha and production of 112.9
thousand million tonnes with productivity of 10.7 million tonnes per ha during 2012.
East Garo Hills district has 3 blocks, vir, Dambo Rongjeng, Samanda and Songsak
block.
During 2012 area under pineapple in the district was 822 ha and the
production of 14,006 metric tons with the productivity of 17039 kg/ha.
Multistage sampling design was adopted in selection of district. Blocks
and villages. In the first stage, East Garo Hills district was selected. In the second
stage, Samanda, Songsak and Dambo Rongjeng blocks of East Garo Hills district
were selected. In third stage, two villages from each blocks were selected. Thus from
each village, ten Pineapple growers were selected. In this way from six villages of
three blocks, sixty pineapple growers were selected. The techniques like tabular
analysis, functional analysis were used to analyze the data in the present study.
Average size of holding of pineapple growers was 1.05 hectares of
which net sown area was 1.11 hectares. The cropping intensity was 107.21 per cent.
The average area under pineapple was 0.76 hectare. The gross cropped area was 1.19
hectares.
Per hectare establishment cost of pineapple orchard was 33799.42. Per
hectare cost of cultivation of pineapple was Rs 83292.62, whereas per hectare yield
was 184.43 quintals. The share of cost-A and cost-B in the total cost worked out to
12.33 per cent and 89.78 per cent, respectively. Input-output ratio was found to be 3.35
