India is the world’s largest producer and consumer of milk accounting for 20 per cent of world production. Milk production in the country grew at 6.5 percent to 187.7 million tonnes in 2018-19 as against 176.3 million tonnes in 2017-18, which was more than double the growth of world milk production. It improved the per capita availability of milk to 394 grams per day. The dairy sector in India has demonstrated significant growth in the past 10 years with milk production increasing at the rate of 4.8 percent CAGR. India’s dairy cooperatives have played a key role in expanding milk and milk-product marketing. Co-operatives & private dairies still procure only about 20 per cent of the milk produced in the country, while 34 per cent is sold in the unorganized market and about 46 per cent is consumed locally even though India’s dairy industry is expected to maintain growth at a CAGR of 15 per cent over 2016-2021. During 2013 to 2018, the milking machine market witnessed an impressive growth at a CAGR of six per cent, mainly attributed to the rapid penetration of automation in the dairy industry. Demand for milking machine has been significantly influenced by the advent of advanced electromechanical technologies in the dairy equipment industry. The milking machine market was estimated at over US$ 1.5 billion in 2018.en_US
