dc.description.abstractIrrigation is considered as an important input for increasing agricultural production- Water is natural but scarce input available to the farmers- Therefore, it is necessary to use it judiciously and efficiently. In order to increase the maximum use of irrigation, an efficient water resource management is necessary- Efficient- water resource management technique in agriculture signifies the utilization of available water resources to the maximum possible advantage for crop production and there by resulting in overall socio-economic development- of the farmers- Encouraging the optimum utilization of irrigation water as well as adoption of water saving methods would help in sustain irrigated agriculture where water supplies are diminishing, uneven and irregular and help control rising water table. It is of immense importance to know the extent of utilization of irrigation water for increasing crop production- An understanding of knowledge of farmers about utilizing irrigation canal water and problem there in using would help in promoting efficient utilization of water. which in turn would help in increasing the crop production, and therefore the present study entitled "EXTENT OF UTILIZATION OF CANAL IRRIGATION WATER IN ANAND TALUKA OF KADANA COMMAND AREA IN BUJARAT STATE" was undertaken with the following objectives : Objectives of the study 1- To study the personal characteristics of the farmers utilized canal water of the Anand taluka in Command areas' To study the information sources and media used by the farmers in relation to utilization of canal irrigation waters' To ascertain knowledge of the respondents regarding adoption of recommended agricultural practices including recommended methods of irrigation for • selected crops viz-, tobacco and paddy- 4- To study the extent- of adoption of recommended agricultural practices in selected crops viz-, tobacco and Paddys' To know the extent of utilization of canal irrigation water in Anand taluka of Kadana command Aresi- 6- To study the relationship between personal characteristics of the respondents and their extent of utilization of canal irrigation water- 7. To study the problems faced by the farmer* in cultivation and in utilization of canal irrigation water.METHODOLOGY The present Btudy was conducted in Anand taluka of Kadana Command Area in Gujarat State- A simple random sampling procedure was adopted to select the taluka villages and respondents- To study the various selected variables, standardized socio-economic status scale (Pareek and Trivedi, 1963), was used with appropriate modifications- For measuring the knowledge of the respondents, a teacher made test based on scale developed by Jha and Singh (1970) was used- For measuring the adoption level of the respondents, a simple adoption scale developed by Sengupt-a (1967) was used- The problems were measured with the help of scores- The interview schedule developed in accordance with the objectives of the study was translated in to Gujarati and was present before final use- Frequency and percentage were used for simple comparision, whereas, mean and standard deviation were used for categorization- Forascertaining the extent- and direction of relationship, the correlation coefficient test was applied- Major findings 1- Majority of canal water utilizers were of middle age group having education upto secondary and higher secondary level and farming and animal husbandry as their main occupation- H- Majority of the canal water utilizers were haivng joint type of family of size betweerf 6 to 10 members. 3- Majority of the canal water utilizers had land holding upto 1-00 hectare and membership in one organization- ^- More than half of the canal water utilizers had a medium socio-economic status- 5- Majority of the canal water utilizers had a annual income ranges from R5.25,001/- to Rs-65,000/-- 6- Among formal sources village level worker; among informal sources, friends and relatives; among mass media, radio, were reported to be the major source of information. 7. Majority of the canal water utilizers were having medium knowledge levels' Majority of the canal water utilizers were having medium adoption level- 9- Majority of the canal water utilizers had a medium level of utilization of canal irrigation water- 10- Age, land holding, annual income and socio—economic status were negatively but significantly correlated with extent. of utilization, wfiile family type and social participation was positively but significantly correlated with extent of utilization- Whereas education, family size and occupation were nonsignificantly correlated with extent of utilization- 11- Farmers those who are near to outlet of canal, irregular and inadequate water supply, due to lack of bridge difficulties in transportation and situation of the land at the tail end of canal were the major problems in utilization of canal irrigation water in command area of Anand taluka.en_US
