An investigation was carried out on “Assessment of F3 population of China aster (Callistephus chinensis (L.) Nees.) for quantitative and qualitative traits” during 2019-2020 at Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, College of Horticulture, Navanagar, Bagalkote district, Karnataka with an objective to assess genetic variability in twenty five lines of F3 population of four crosses of China aster viz., Arka Kamini × Phule Ganesh Purple, Arabhavi Aster Collection-1(AAC-1) × Arka Poornima, Arabhavi Aster Collection-1 × Arka Kamini, Phule Ganesh Purple × Arabhavi Aster Collection-1. The analysis of variance revealed that highly significant difference among the twenty five lines for all the characters studied indicates the higher magnitude of variability in the lines. The estimates of genotypic coefficient of variation and phenotypic coefficient of variation values were higher with high heritability and high genetic advance as percent of mean for the traits like leaf area per plant, plant spread in North – South, individual flower weight, flower yield per plant and seed yield per plant indicating the possible role of additive gene action in their genetic control with less influence of environment on these traits. At genotypic level, flower yield per plant showed positive and highly significant correlation with plant height, number of branches, leaf area per plant, plant spread in N-S and E-W, stem girth, duration of flowering, number of flowers, individual flower weight, stalk length, flower diameter, disc diameter, length of ray florets and shelf life suggesting the possibility of simultaneous selection for these characters. Path analysis revealed that plant spread in EW, stem girth, days to first flower initiation, days to first flowering, number of flowers, individual flower weight, stalk length, disc diameter and shelf life had direct positive effect on flower yield per plant indicating these traits directly influence flower yield and improvement of these traits enhances the flower yield per plant. Based on the performance of the lines in the present study with respect to qualitative and quantitative traits, some of them were considered as best performing lines viz., Arka Kamini X PGP (Line-24) – Strong purple, AAC-1 X Arka Poornima (Line- 41) – Deep purplish pink, AAC-1 X Arka Kamini (Line- 22) – Vivid purplish pink, AAC-1 X Arka Kamini (Line- 48) - Vivid purplish pink and PGP X AAC-1 (Line- 8) - Strong purple.
