Genetic diversity and identification of vegetable types was studied in about 219 accessions of soybean. ANOVA revealed significant differences among the accessions for ten quantitative traits out of eleven studied. A wide range and high variance was observed for eleven qualitative traits. The trait clusters/plant exhibited highest estimate of phenotypic coefficient of variance and phenotypic coefficient of variance followed by 100-seed weight (g). High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent mean was recorded for plant height (cm), branches/plant, clusters/plant, pods/cluster, seeds/pod, pod length (cm), seed size (cm) and 100-seed weight (g). Eight new vegetable soybean type accessions namely IC-501164, EC-95286, IC-25763, EC-110318, IC-501197, GC-9901-35, EC-242072 and EC-103153 were identified. Hundred seed weight (g) exhibited highly significant and positive correlation with seed size (cm) and pod length (cm). Twenty SSR markers were used to access the genetic diversity among 219 accessions. Three SSRs Satt_137, Satt_233 and Satt_200 recorded high PIC value. AMOVA accounted variation within and among populations. Population structure analysis revealed 10 sub-populations with significant FST values (P>0.001) and supporting the existence of genetic structure. Genetic distances between sub-populations ranged from 0.0001 to 0.0173. Bar plot analysis of the genetic compositions of individual accessions of soybean based on 20 SSR markers revealed the existence of population structure. Further, additional genetic variability in the background of Karune was created using EMS (0.25%) and about 250 plants in M1 and 125 plants in M2 generation were field evaluated.en_US
