Genetic variability of butyrophilin (BTN1A1) gene among 151 crossbred cattle of Kerala was investigated and a total of 17 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected while 13 being novel. Among the SNPs detected three polymorphisms G21A, A465G and G506A were selected for detailed analysis. The study population was genotyped using high resolution melt (HRM) curve analysis and two genotypes GG (0.86) and GA (0.14) were revealed for G21A polymorphism, while KK (0.25) and KL (0.75) for A465G transition and MM (0.25) and MN (0.75) with respect to G506A polymorphism. Chi-square analysis revealed the presence of population in H-W equilibrium only with respect to SNP G21A. General linear model-univariate analysis was carried out to study the association of SNPs with milk production traits by considering herd, season of calving and parity as non-genetic factors and trait as a dependent variable. Association analysis of G21A revealed significantly higher 305- day milk yield (GG: 2720.74 ± 122.92 kg; GA: 3250.20 ± 183.24 kg), fat yield (GG: 106.55 ± 4.32 kg; GA: 126.30 ± 13.35 kg) and SNF yield (GG: 211.52 ± 9.20 kg; GA: 246.90 ± 13.70 kg) for GA genotype (P≤0.05) and SNF per cent (GG: 7.80 ± 0.04 %; GA: 7.65 ± 0.07 %) for GG genotype. Similarly, MN genotype of G506A had shown significantly higher (P≤0.05) 305-day milk yield (MM: 2358.06 ± 141.46 kg; MN: 3097.51 ± 121.92 kg), fat yield (MM: 94.14 ± 5.00 kg; MN: 119.95 ± 4.31 kg), SNF yield (MM: 183.14 ± 10.50 kg; MN: 239.08 ± 9.03 kg) and MM genotype for fat per cent (MM: 4.10 ± 0.08 %; MN: 3.90 ± 0.70 %). However, KK genotype of A465G had shown a significantly higher (P≤0.01) fat per cent (KK: 4.14 ± 0.08 %; KL: 3.91 ± 0.07 %) and SNF per cent (KK: 7.86 ± 0.06 %; KL: 7.73 ± 0.05 %). The current study recommends alleles G, K and M as favourable with respect to SNPs G21A, A465G and G506A, respectively for breeding programmes in crossbred cattle of Kerala.en_US
