Abstract
A study on perception of rural youth towards sustainable agriculture practices in Raichur district of Karnataka state was carried out during 2012-13 by following simple random sampling 120 youths were selected from the district. The data was elicited through personal interview method and analysed with suitable statistical tools.
The major findings of the study were 28.33 per cent of the respondents have studied up to 7th std. Majority of the respondents (72.50%) had a farming experience of 9 to 16 years. With regard to agriculture implements, cent per cent of the respondents possessed wooden plough followed by harrow (98.33%), sprayer (93.33%), 66.67 per cent of the respondent sought information through neighbours /peer groups frequently.
Majority of the respondents perceived the correct meaning and its uses regarding construction of farm pond (98.34%), mulching (85.00%), recycling of farm waste (79.16%) and contour bunds (78.33%). The integrated pest management and integrated nutrient management practices were perceived correctly by 91.66 per cent and 77.50 per cent respectively.
Cent per cent of the represents were fully adopted the practices of ploughing across the slope, summer ploughing, levelling of the land, crop rotation and border cropping. Eighty per cent of the respondent partially adopted recommended tillage practices followed by application of FYM by 76.64 per cent, sowing suitable varieties (71.66%) and inter cropping (56.66%).
The feedback from the youth was elicited and revealed that cent per cent of the respondents have expressed the vagaries of monsoon is major constraints for agriculture operation to be taken up, followed by limited availability of organic manure (82.50%), poor knowledge and skills in preparation and use of bio-pesticides (81.66%), poor knowledge in use of green manure (79.16%). The youth suggested to provide training on organic manure usage (87.50%), followed by establishment of farm forestry (82.50%), organizing film shows and field trips (81.66%) and providing minor irrigation facility (61.66%) to their lands.
