Abstract
One hundred and ninety rural girls in the age group of 14-16 yrs of
Osmanabad district were personally interviewed for collecting information about
opinions on marriage and mate selection. Irrespective of the types and SES of
families aflthe rural girls stated that marriage has significance in their life and
proper age for girls to get married is above 18 yrs. Few significant differences
were noted in the rural girls' opinions about readiness required by the partners for
marital success based on their types and SES of families. All the rural girls
wanted traditional method of marriage. Irrespective of the types and SES of
families the rural girls gave maximum weightage to religion, caste, customs, area
of residence and same spoken language while minimum weightage to the type and
sizes of family with respect to mates' family background. With respect to mates'
particulars maximum weightages were given to mates' complexion, dressing style,
age. habits, occupation, body built, facial features monthly income and education
while the lowest weightage was given to the matching of horoscope. All the rural
girls expressed some or other expectations from their prospective in-laws for
having happy marital life. Significantly more number rural girls in nuclear
families didn't want to have engagement programme as compared to their
counterparts while such significant differences were not noted in the rural girls of
middle and high SES families. Significantly more number of the rural girls in
nuclear and middle SES were in favour of dating as compared to their
counterparts. Significantly a higher percentage of the rural girls in joint families
w ere in favour of aandcm as compared to their counterparts while such significant
difference was not found in them based on their SES. Significantly a higher
percentage of the nuclear families' rural girls were in favour of remarriage of girls
as compared to their counterparts and such difference was not found on the basis
of their SES. Significantly a higher percentage of the rural girls in Joint and high
SES families w ere in favour of dowry as compared to their counterparts. However
majority of the rural girls suggested innovative and good remedial measures for
eradication of dow'ry. Majority of the rural girls irrespective of their types and
SES of families reported that premarital counselling is essential for rural girls for
achieving marital success.
