Abstract
This study was undertaken to develop and evaluate a motorized paddy thresher for hilly area on a paddy crop variety Basmati-370 at Research Farm, SKUAST-J, Chatha, Jammu during Kharif, 2017.The development process began with a conceptual design based on computer aided design (CAD) software. The prototype consist of threshing unit, power transmission unit, canopy, sliding chute, main frame and a prime mover (1.5kW/2 hp electric motor). The effect of threshing cylinder diameter (D1= 300 mm, D2 = 350 mm and D3 = 400 mm), cylinder speed (S1= 300 rpm, S2 = 400 rpm and S3 = 500 rpm) and input feed (F1= 1 kg, F2 = 1.5 kg and F3 = 2 kg) were studied on the threshing efficiency (%), grain damage (%), germination count (%) and output capacity (kgh-1). The threshing efficiency (%), grain damage (%) and output capacity (kgh-1) increased with an increase in the threshing cylinder diameter for all treatment combinations under study. The threshing efficiency (%), grain damage (%) and output capacity (kgh-1) increased with an increase in the cylinder speed for all treatment combinations under study. The output capacity increased while as threshing efficiency and grain damage decreased with an increase in the input feed for all treatment combinations under study. A combination of the independent variables which resulted in grain damage of less than 1%, germination count of more than 80% and highest threshing efficiency of 98.65 % was achieved at a treatment combination of threshing cylinder diameter – 400 mm, cylinder speed – 500 rpm and input feed – 1 kg for Basmati-370 paddy variety.
