Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Generation mean analysis in Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.)” was undertaken by using six generations viz., P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 derived from three crosses namely Phule Green Gold x Preethi, Arka Harit x Co-White Long and Hirkani x Konkan Tara. The material was evaluated in a Randomized Block Design with two replicates during summer 2018. The characters were studied, length of vine (cm), number of branches per vine, days required to first female flower, days to 50 per cent flowering, number of nodes per vine, number of female flower per vine, days required to first harvest of fruit, fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), fruit weight (g), number of fruits per vine, fruit yield per vine (kg), fruit yield per plot (kg), fruit yield per hectare (q), per cent incidence of leaf miner, downy mildew and powdery mildew. Analysis of variance for yield and yield components showed highly significant differences among the genotypes which indicated that the presence of substantial variability in the material under study. Mean performance of different characters, the parents Hirkani and Konkan Tara was found superior than rest of parents and the crosses Phule Green Gold x Preethi and Hirkani x Konkan Tara were found superior. The scaling test indicates the presence of non-allelic gene interaction in all the crosses. Means and standard errors were worked out and used for calculating gene effects. The estimate gene effect for different characters in three crosses showed that duplicate and complimentary type of epistasis. Duplicate epistasis was preponderance in most of the characters and suggests that improvement of traits by selection and complimentary type epistasis suggests for improvement in traits by hybridization method. Magnitude of heterosis was calculated over better and mid parent. The cross combinations Phule Green Gold x Preethi and Hirkani x Konkan Tara showed significant heterosis over better and mid parent. The inbreeding depression were positively and negatively lower significant indicate that the presence of vigour in F2’s can be attributed to additive and epistatic gene action. Narrow sense heritability was important for crop improvement of yield contributing character. High to low narrow sense heritability was exhibited by different characters and play important role in selection of population for crop improvement in bitter gourd.
