Abstract
A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the garlic genotypes for their growth, yield and to study the effect of storage containers on storage behavior of garlic cv. AAS-2 (Vannur Local), at Kittur Rani Channama College of Horticulture, Arabhavi during 2009-2010. The field trials were laid out in a randomized block design during rabi season. Among the sixteen genotypes evaluated, higher plant height was recorded in AAS - 9 (51.35 cm). Significantly higher bulb yield per hector was recorded in AAS -2 (Vannur Local) (4.13 t/ha). Significantly highest sulphur content and volatile oil content was observed in the genotype G- 282 (0.065% and 0.20%, respectively). Among different storage containers, the least PLW was observed (4.23%, 11.33% and 18.44%) in bulb stored in ventilated polyethylene bags (20% vents) of 200 gauge at 30, 60 and 90 days of storage, respectively and maximum TSS (30.39 0Brix) was recorded in garlic bulbs hung on bamboo poles (T1- control) at 30 days after storage. At 60 and 90 days after storage, maximum TSS was recorded in T5- Garlic bulbs stored in nylon net bags (27.73 0Brix and 27.92 0Brix, respectively). In the present study, promising garlic genotypes G-10, AAS-1, AAS-2 (Vannur Local), G-282 and G-275 were found promising under GLBC conditions with better growth yield and quality for rabi season. Among different storage containers, the treatment garlic bulbs hung on bamboo poles (T1) recorded no sprouting and rotting losses with minimum loss due to storage pest.
