Abstract
Investigations were carried out to study the effect of propagation media, rhizome size and growth regulators on growth, yield and quality of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) at the Department of Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops, Kittur Rani Channamma College of Horticulture, Arabhavi during 2012- 2013. The experiment was conducted in a Factorial Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications and twelve treatments in different combinations. The main objectives of the study was to evaluate the type of propagation media on growth of turmeric sprouts in protrays, to study the size of rhizomes and growth regulators on growth, yield and quality of turmeric. Among the different treatments evaluated for growth of turmeric sprouts in portrays, the treatment T11 (Red soil + Sand + Coco peat @ 1:1:1) recorded maximum (41.56 cm) plant height, pseudostem girth (8.48 mm), leaves per plant (3.13), number of sprouts (2.03), leaf area (120.64 cm2) and the least days taken (6.33) for germination was recorded in T2 (Coco peat + Sand @ 1:1). Among the different rhizome size and growth regulators and their interaction effects S1G3 (25 g rhizome size + NAA 20 ppm) recorded maximum plant height (89.71 cm), number of leaves per tiller (28.18), leaf area (303.60 cm2), numbers of tillers per clump (6.00), and harvest index (96.03 %) while the maximum pseudostem girth was recorded in S1G2 (25 g rhizome size + 6- BA 5 ppm). Among the yield parameters, treatment S1G3 (25 g rhizome size + NAA 20 ppm) recorded maximum number of rhizomes per clump (42.11), diameter of rhizome clump (38.72 mm), clump size (58.06 cm2), yield per clump (426.69 g/ clump), yield per plot (10.25 kg/ plot) and yield per hectare (24.04 t/ ha). Among the quality parameters maximum curcumin (9.26 g/ 100 g) was recorded in the treatment S1G1 (25 g rhizome size + Cycocel 1000 ppm), maximum driage (22.08 %) was recorded in S1G3 (25 g rhizome size + NAA 20 ppm) and the essential oil content was maximum (3.63 %) in S1G3 (25 g rhizome size + NAA 20 ppm).
