Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Development and Evaluation of a Power Operated Portable Thresher for Pulses” involved the fabrication of a power operated portable thresher prototype and its subsequent evaluation on a pulse crop of chickpea (variety GNG-1581) at Pulse Research Sub Station, Samba SKUAST- J during rabi, 2017. The development process began with a conceptual design based on computer aided design (CAD) software. The prototype consist of threshing cylinder concave assembly top cover and hopper assembly, sieve assembly, prime mover (1.5 kW/ 2 hp electric motor), blower, and a power transmission system. The effects of different cylinder speeds (S1= 10.4, S2= 12.5, & S3= 15.6 ms-1) and concave clearances (C1= 15, C2= 17, & C3= 19 mm) were studied on threshing efficiency (%), mechanical grain damage (%), cleaning efficiency (%), scatter loss (%), grain throughput capacity (kgh-1) and power consumption (Wh-1). Cylinder speed was found to be the more critical factor. Among all the treatment combinations the threshing efficiency was maximum (99.37%) for C1S3, mechanical grain damage was minimum (3.38%) for C3S1, cleaning efficiency was maximum (87.43%) for C1S3, scatter loss was minimum (3.62%) for C3S1 and the maximum throughput capacity (17.35 kgh-1) was obtained for C1S3 combination. The average power consumption per hour of the prototype was 380 Wh-1 and 420 Wh-1 at no load and load condition, respectively.
