Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Standardization of method and time of grafting in pecan (Carya illinoensis Wangenh) under intermediate agro-climatic conditions of Jammu & Kashmir” was carried out at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Tandwal , Rajouri, Sher-e- Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu, Jammu & Kashmir, India during 2016. Grafting method performed in the experiment were Tongue grafting, Cleft grafting and Side grafting with different timings viz., 4th week of February, 1st week of March, 2nd week of March and 3rd week of March. The result indicated that among all the grafting methods, tongue grafting performed during 1st week of March showed highest grafting success (69.16 %) and survival percentage (47.33 %). Maximum number of leaves (24.55), plant height (118.38 cm), diameter of rootstock (2.40 cm), diameter of scion (2.19 cm), plant biomass (131.37 g), leaf area (193.66 cm2) were recorded in tongue grafting performed during 1st week of March. Irrespective of the method of grafting, the grafting performed in the 1st week of March showed better performance as compared to other dates of grafting. The results in the other experiment revealed that cost of cultivation was same in all the three methods of grafting (₹ 20415.6). Net returns were recorded maximum in tongue grafting (₹ 5384.2) and minimum in side grafting (₹ 2984.2). The Benefit: Cost ratio (B: C ratio) was also found to be maximum in tongue grafting (1:1.26) and minimum in side grafting (1:1.02). Therefore, it can be concluded that tongue grafting performed during 1st week of March is the best method and time of grafting in pecan nut under intermediate agro-climatic conditions of Jammu & Kashmir. Net returns was recorded highest in tongue grafting and Benefit: Cost ratio (B: C ratio) also founded maximum in tongue grafting.
