Abstract
The present investigation with respect to'Studies on floral biology and valuation of seedling progenies of karonda (Carissa carandas L.)'was carried out at K. R. C. College of Horticulture, Arabhavi, Gokak taluk of Belgaum district, Karnataka during 2011-2012. Among all the progenies of karonda studied, the progeny ARB-6 was recorded highest plant height (282. 33 cm), plant girth (189. 92 mm), number of primary branches (8. 00) and plant spread (278. 33 cm N-S and 264. 33 cm E-W). The study conducted on floral biology revealed that, the progeny ARB-4 was recorded the minimum days took for bud initiation to flowering (15. 77 days) and had maximum number of sepals (5. 17) and stamens (5. 13). The maximum style and stigma length (12. 70 mm and 4. 83 mm respectively) was observed in ARB-6. The maximum per cent anthesis was observed at 5. 00 am which was ranged from 45. 33 to 58. 67. The maximum per cent of pollen viability and germination (95. 75 and 24. 67% respectively) was noticed in ARB-4. The variation regarding fruit characters was observed ARB-4 had Huit length (17. 28 mm), fruit girth (17. 81 mm), fruit weight (2. 75 g), number of seeds per fruit (4. 07), weight of seeds per Huit (0. 28 g), pulp weight (2. 47 g). Variation also observed regards to fruit quality parameters. The maximum values with respect to TSS (12. 00 ° B), ascorbic acid (37. 78 mg/toog) total sugar (17. 77%) and reducing sugar (16. 47%) were observed in ARB-6 at mature stage, however non reducing sugar was highest in ARB-4 (1. 39%). At ripe stage the maximum TSS (14. 87 ° B), was observed in ARB-3. While ARB-6 had higher ascorbic acid (34. 44 mg/toog), total sugars (19. 60%), reducing sugar (18. 70%) and non reducing sugars in ARB-2 (1. 65%). The significantly highest yield was observed in ARB-6 (4. 58 t/ha). ARB-6, as the progeny had favorable yield attributing characters like numbers of cluster per plant (86. 33), number of *uits per cluster (8. 60) and number of *uits per plant (782. 33). Further the performance of ARB- 4 was on par with ARB-6, but ARB-4 showed more Huit drop. The study conducted on organoleptic evaluation for *uits and pickles, the overall acceptability was found highest in ARB-4 for (3. 03 fruits) and ARB-3 for (3. 85 pickles).
