Abstract
A field experiment was carried out during 2014-15, at Kittur Rani Channamma College of Horticulture, Arabhavi, in Gokak taluk in Belgaum District, Karnataka, on “Effect of diatomaceous earth as a source of silicon on growth, yield and quality of ratoon banana cv. Grand Naine”. Among the different treatments, maximum pseudostem height (211.89 cm), pseudostem diameter (22.92 cm), number of leaves (21.45) and leaf area (16.11 m2) were recorded in the treatment T10 (RDF + 750 kg/ha DE) and the minimum were recorded in the treatment T4 (D.E alone) at different stages of plant growth. Maximum total chlorophyll (2.39 and 2.56 mg/g at five month after ratooning and at the time of harvesting respectively) was recorded by the treatment T10 and T9 respectively whereas the lowest was noticed in the treatment T1. With respect to total crop duration, treatment T10 (RDF + 500 kg/ha of DE) has taken minimum number of days (281.66 days) as compared to other treatment. The highest bunch weight (24 kg) and yield (74.03 t/ha) was recorded in the treatment T10 (RDF + 750 kg/ha DE). Similar trend was also observed for bunch and finger characters, pulp weight, peel weight, pulp to peel ratio, NPK in leaf and soil, whereas the minimum whitefly and sigatoka incidence also noticed in T10(RDF + 500 kg/ha of DE). Among quality parameters, minimum days for ripening, maximum shelf life TSS, minimum acidity and sugars was noticed in T9 (RDF + 500 kg/ha of DE) and highest cost: benefit ratio was recorded in T5 (Half of RDF+250kg/ha). Among the different treatment, T10 has recorded maximum growth, yield and quality parameters which was on par with the treatment T9.
