Abstract
Agriculture and livestock are inter-dependent in our economy and
livestock has been recognized as an important approach for sustained
livelihood. Livestock contributes manure and draught power to agriculture
while crop residues form the major source of feed to the livestock and this
system of interdependence has sustained for centuries. Livestock are important
sources of income and employment in rural sector. They help to meet the
equity objective in rural development through their contribution to the cash
income of small and marginal formers and landless laborers. The World cattle
population accounts for 1371 million, buffalo population accounts for 170
millions, sheep and goat population accounts for 1024 and 767 million. The
gross value of output from livestock sector has increased from Rs.20, 856
crores in 1950-51 to Rs.l, 64,509 crores in 2003-04 to Rs 388370 croresin
2011-12.
Multistage sampling design will be adopted in selection of district,
tehsil, villages and formers who rearing sheep. At first stage, Ahmednagar
district will be purposively selected for study on the basis of sheep. At second
stage, Pamer and Sangamner tehsil will be selected on the basis of higher sheep
population. At third stage, from each of selected tehsil, eight villages will be
selected on the basis of higher number of sheep rearing fanners. At fourth
stage, from each selected village ten farmers will be selected on the basis of
higher number of sheep. Thus from eight villages, 80 formers will be selected.
It was observed that gross return was Rs 95647.77 per sheep unit. On
the contrary, total cost was Rs 71068.60. The net profit in business was Rs
24579.17 per sheep unit. Operating income was Rs 45073.56 per sheep unit. It
was clear that output-input ratio was 1.34.lt inferred that the sheep unite were
profitable business.
