Abstract
A soil survey was conducted to characterize black soils of Mudhol taluka of Bagalkot district irrigated with different water sources and different cropping systems for their fertility aspects in. All the soils studied were calcareous in nature with high CaCO3 content. The pH of soils ranged from slightly alkaline to high alkalinity and it varied significantly with and without irrigations. The electrical conductivity (ECe) also differed significantly among soils irrigated with different water sources. With respect to soil fertility, SOC was in medium range in majority of the soil samples. The available nitrogen ranged from low to medium while, available potassium content was in medium to high range. Significant differences were observed with respect to available nitrogen and potassium contents among soils irrigated with different water sources. Available-P2O5 was observed in low to medium range and no significant difference was found with respect to irrigation water sources or cropping systems. Among secondary nutrients, available Ca and Mg contents were in medium to high range and no significant differences were observed with respect to sources of irrigation water and cropping systems. Available-S content in these soils were found in all the three ranges namely, low, medium and high. Among micro nutrient contents, DTPA-Cu, Fe and Mn were in higher range and differed significantly with water sources. However, DTPA-Zn was found in all the three low, medium and high ranges and it varied significantly. In terms of nutrient availability in different cropping systems, in general, it was observed in the order: Sugarcane > Maize/Groundnut- Onion > Cereal-Pulse cropping systems. The correlation for the above parameters revealed that the soil pH, ECe, CaCO3 and SOC recorded major influence on nutrient availability. The soil organic-C had influenced only available-N and DTPA-Mn significantly. The soil pH was found negatively and significantly correlated with DTPA – Mn, Fe, Zn and Cu contents. The soil EC showed good correlation with CaCO3, Available - K2O, Mg and S contents. The soil CaCO3 content showed negative correlation with available-P2O5, available- Ca and DTPA-Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu.
