Abstract
The investigation on the "Biology and management of mustard sawfly, Athalia lugens proxima (Klug) on mustard crop" was conducted during Rabi 1998-99 at RARS, R.S.Pura, SKUAST, Jammu. The male and female mated soon after emergence. The female started laying eggs within 3-6 hours after first mating. Eggs were laid singly within the leaf tissue close to leaf margin and a single female laid 72.05±26.28 eggs during an oviposition period of 5.50±1.29 days. The larvae passed through 5-6 instars and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th instar occupied a period of 2.41±0.31, 1.52±0.32, 1.88±0.38, 2.06±0.37, 3.05±0.40 and 1.53±0.25 days respectively. The mean incubation, larval, pre-pupal and pupal period were 5.45±0.34, 12.47±0.65, 4.96±0.62 and 7.03±0.55 days respectively. Developmental period from egg to adult emergence varied from 27-32 (29.93±1.21) days. Longevity of adult male and female was 5.75±1.12 and 5.65±1.30 days respectively. The egg measured 0.73±0.06 x 0.48±0.05 mm. The morphometries (length x breadth) of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th instar larvae were (2.10±0.42)x(0.42±0.09), (3.59±0.51)x (0.69±0.06),(5.94±0.75)x(1.00±0.10), (8.68±1.52)x(1.43±0.08), (12.37±1.07)x(2.02±0.16) and (13.78±1.12) x(2.43±0.15) mm respectively. After last ecdysis, the full grown larvae stopped feeding. The pre-pupa was reduced in size and entered in the soil for pupation in an earthen pupal cell. The morphometries (length x breadth) of pre-pupae and pupae were (10.92±0.60)x (2.00±0.14) and (6.27±0.51)x(2.81±0.28) mm respectively. Adult males were smaller in size (5.32±0.12x 1.69±0.07 mm) than the females (6.66±0.30x 2.15±0.10mm).
