Abstract
The present study was carried out at Department of Vegetable Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during 2010 to 2012. The experimental material consisted of 39 F1s of garden pea (obtained through line x tester method by using 13 lines and 3 testers), 13 lines, 3 testers and 2 checks viz. Arkel and MA-6 were grown in November 2011. Highly significant GCA and SCA variance observed for most of the characters studied indicated the importance of both additive and non-additive gene expression of these characters. The estimates of component of genetic variance indicated predominance role of non-additive gene action in the expression of most of characters. Among the lines, 09/PMVAR-7, PB.89 and NS-3 were found to be the best general combiners for days taken to flowering and days taken to maturity. 09/PMVAR-4 and NS-3 for number of seeds per pod, number of pods per node, 100-seed weight, number of pods per plant and green pod yield per plant. Among the testers, PM-65 was good combiner for most of the characters studied. The cross combination Arka Sampoorna x 08/PMVAR-4 was good specific combiner for days to marketable maturity, pod length, pod weight, number of seeds per pod, number of pods per node, number of pods per plant, green pod yield per plant, plant height, crude protein and soluble protein content while the crosses namely, Arka Karthik x PM-65 and PB.89 x PM-65 showed maximum heterosis over better parent and standard checks for most of the traits studied. The cross combinations showing good SCA effects and heterosis can be used in future breeding programmes.
