Abstract
Twenty four fenugreek genotypes were evaluated in Randomized Complete Block Design, with three replications to study the genetic variability, correlation and path analysis at Department of Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops unit of K.R.C. College of Horticulture, Arabhavi during the period between December-2011 to February–2012. Analysis of variance revealed high significant (at P=0.01) difference for twenty-seven growth and yield characters out of thirty-four parameters studied. Broad genetic base was evident as the value of genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variance was high for fresh weight of the plant at 60 DAS, dry weight of the plant at 30 DAS, dry weight of the plant at 60 DAS, days to first flowering and days taken from flowering to maturity. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean was observed for characters for plant spread (E-W) at 45 and 60 DAS, fresh weight of the plant at 30 and 60 DAS, dry weight of the plant at 30, 60 DAS and at harvest, number of pods per plant, weight of the pods per plant, seed yield per plant, seed yield per plot and seed yield per hectare indicated the predominant role of additive genetic component in governing of these traits. Correlation studies revealed significant and positive association of seed yield per hectare with plant dry weight at harvest, weight of the pod and number of pods per plant both at genotypic and phenotypic level, whereas plant spread (N-S) at 45 DAS, harvest index showed positive and significant correlation at genotypic level only. Path coefficient revealed that plant height at 45 DAS, plant spread (E-W) at 45 DAS, plant dry weight at harvest, pod length, harvest index and hundred seed weight characters have direct positive effect on seed yield. Genotypes like UM-8, UM-4, Rmt-1C2 and UM-3 were found promising.
