Abstract
The investigation on heterosis and combining ability in okra was carried out during the year 010-2011 at the department of Vegetable Science, Kittur Rani Channamma College of Horticulture, Arabhavi. Seventy two hybrids derived by crossing 18 lines with four testers were evaluated along with parents in RBD and data was subjected to line x tester analysis. The magnitude of heterosis over the commercial check (MHY-10) was high in the desirable direction for internodal length (110.31%), number of branches per plant (61.54%), total yield per plant (61.04%), average fruit weight (61.04%), plant height at 90 days after sowing (DAS) (56.07%), number of leaves on 90 DAS (47.59%), number of fruits per plant (44.51%), plant height at 60 DAS (43.69%), number of leaves on 45 DAS (41.03%), plant height at 45 DAS (36.86%), number of leaves on 60 DAS (36.72%), nodes at first fruiting (32.57%) and number of nodes on main stem (30.17%). The hybrid which exhibited maximum heterosis (61.04%) for total yield per plant over the commercial check (MHY-10) was KO-2 x PK followed by KO-11 x V6 (60.25%), KO-9 x V5 (58.23%), KO-18 x V6 (50.37%) and KO-15 x PK (41.69%). The crosses KO-11 x V6, KO-2 x PK, KO-14 x AA, KO-15 x PK, KO-3 x PK and KO-9 x V5 were identified as the good specific combiners for total yield per plant and lines KO-9, KO-2, KO-4, KO-18, KO-7 and KO-17 were identified as the good general combiners for total yield per plant in order of merit. Among the lines KO-1, KO-2, KO-3, KO-4, KO-6, KO-7, KO-8, KO-9, KO-17 and KO-18 and V6 among the testers were identified as good combiners over all characters based on comprehensive study considering gca effects of 17 characters. Non-additive gene action was predominant for total yield per plant and number of leaves at 90 DAS. Non-additive genetic component was higher than additive component for number of fruits per plant, number of leaves at 45 DAS, number of seeds per fruit, number of nodes on the main stem, fruit length, number of locules per fruit, fruit diameter, number of leaves at 60 DAS, number of ridges per fruit, internodal length, days to first flowering, plant height at 45 DAS, number of branches per plant and average fruit weight.
