Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur

The history of agricultural education in Kerala can be traced back to the year 1896 when a scheme was evolved in the erstwhile Travancore State to train a few young men in scientific agriculture at the Demonstration Farm, Karamana, Thiruvananthapuram, presently, the Cropping Systems Research Centre under Kerala Agricultural University. Agriculture was introduced as an optional subject in the middle school classes in the State in 1922 when an Agricultural Middle School was started at Aluva, Ernakulam District. The popularity and usefulness of this school led to the starting of similar institutions at Kottarakkara and Konni in 1928 and 1931 respectively. Agriculture was later introduced as an optional subject for Intermediate Course in 1953. In 1955, the erstwhile Government of Travancore-Cochin started the Agricultural College and Research Institute at Vellayani, Thiruvananthapuram and the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Mannuthy, Thrissur for imparting higher education in agricultural and veterinary sciences, respectively. These institutions were brought under the direct administrative control of the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Animal Husbandry, respectively. With the formation of Kerala State in 1956, these two colleges were affiliated to the University of Kerala. The post-graduate programmes leading to M.Sc. (Ag), M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees were started in 1961, 1962 and 1965 respectively. On the recommendation of the Second National Education Commission (1964-66) headed by Dr. D.S. Kothari, the then Chairman of the University Grants Commission, one Agricultural University in each State was established. The State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) were established in India as an integral part of the National Agricultural Research System to give the much needed impetus to Agriculture Education and Research in the Country. As a result the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) was established on 24th February 1971 by virtue of the Act 33 of 1971 and started functioning on 1st February 1972. The Kerala Agricultural University is the 15th in the series of the SAUs. In accordance with the provisions of KAU Act of 1971, the Agricultural College and Research Institute at Vellayani, and the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, were brought under the Kerala Agricultural University. In addition, twenty one agricultural and animal husbandry research stations were also transferred to the KAU for taking up research and extension programmes on various crops, animals, birds, etc. During 2011, Kerala Agricultural University was trifurcated into Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU), Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) and Kerala Agricultural University (KAU). Now the University has seven colleges (four Agriculture, one Agricultural Engineering, one Forestry, one Co-operation Banking & Management), six RARSs, seven KVKs, 15 Research Stations and 16 Research and Extension Units under the faculties of Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering and Forestry. In addition, one Academy on Climate Change Adaptation and one Institute of Agricultural Technology offering M.Sc. (Integrated) Climate Change Adaptation and Diploma in Agricultural Sciences respectively are also functioning in Kerala Agricultural University.

    Combining ability in vegetable cowpea

    A 6 x 6 diallel analysis was conducted at the Department of Plant Breeding, College of Agriculture, Vellayani, during 1990, aimed at analysing the combining ability, gene action and heterosis of six vegetable cowpea (Vigna unguiculata var-sesquipedalis) lines collected from the germplasm maintained in this department. The experiment I consisted of crossing the six parental lines in all possible combinations, without reciprocals. The material for experiment II consisted of the six parental lines and fifteen hybrids. They were grown in a Randomised Block Design with three replications.The combining ability analysis was carried out based on method 2 under model I as suggested by Griffing (1956). The treatments showed significant differences in most of characters except number of pods/plant and fruit yield/plant. The variance due to general combining ability was significant and higher in magnitude than specific combining ability for the characters days to flowering, mean weight of pod, mean length of pod, number of seeds/pod, length of internode and seed/pod ratio. It was found that the parent selection 104 and selection 145 were the best general combiners for most of the characters studied. The parent selection 129 was the best general combiner for earliness. The hybrids selection 145 x selection 129 was the best specific combiner for mean weight of pod and number of seeds/pod. The hybrid selection 145 x kurutholapayar was the best specific combiner for earliness. The significance of g.c.a. and s.c.a. variances for most of characters indicate the importance of additive and non-additive gene action in controlling the inheritance of these characters. But additive gene action played a major role suggesting that improvement could be made through selection. Heterosis was calculated over mid and better parental values. Maximum positive heterosis was found for the character fruit yield/plant. Since considerable heterosis was evident in most of the characters, heterosis breeding can be attempted in cowpea

    Economising nitrogen in rice production with sesbania rostrata

    With a view to assessing the influence of in situ growing and incorporation of Sesbania rostrata on the growth and productivity of rice and to study the economy of nitrogen use by rice, a field experiment was conducted at College of Agriculture, Vellayani during the period from July 1991 to December 1991. The experiment was laid out in Randomised Block Design with three replications. Three levels of Rhizobium inoculation for Sesbania rostrata (i1-seed inoculation, i2 - stem inoculation, i3 – seed + stem inoculation), five levels of nitrogen to succeeding crop of rice raised after incorporation of Sesbania rostrata (n0 – no nitrogen, n1 – 25 percent of the recommended dose, n2 – 50 percent of the recommended dose, n3 – 75 percent recommended dose, n4 – 100 percent recommended dose) and one control plot of rice (treated as per KAU package of practices recommendations) were fixed as treatments. The rice variety used was Jyothi. The soil of the experimental site was sandy clay loam, medium in available nitrogen and phosphorus and low in available potassium. An abstract of the results is given below. Among the three different levels of inoculation, seed + stem inoculation was found to influence, the green matter and dry matter yields of Sesbania rostrata positively, though not significantly. The number and dry weight of root nodules and shoot nodules, nitrogen uptake, phosphorus uptake, potassium uptake, calcium uptake and magnesium uptake were not found to be influenced significantly by the different inoculation levels. From these results, it can be concluded that, the easiest method of inoculation viz. seed inoculation is sufficient for satisfactory growth and nitrogen fixation by Sesbania rostrata. The present study also revealed that the growth and nodulation of Sesbania rostrata is not satisfactory under conditions of continuous submergence, as that prevailed during the cropping period of the present experiment. Rhizobium being an aerobic bacteria might have got inhibited under the anaerobic conditions created by continuous water logging. Furthermore, the acidic condition of the soil of the experimental site might have also inhibited the activity of Rhizobium. Thus it shows that liming is absolutely necessary for the satisfactory growth of Sesbania rostrata in acid soils. Among the different treatments tried, though the control (KAU package of practices recommendations) gave the maximum yield, it was on par with the treatment comprising 50 percent of the recommended dose of nitrogen along with Sesbania rostrata incorporation. This shows that there is considerable scope for economising nitrogen by the substitution of chemical nitrogen applied to rice by Sesbania rostrata.

    Quality parameters of certain pre-release cultures of rice developed at regiopnal agricultural research station,Pattambi

    “The quality parameters of certain pre – release cultures of rice developed at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) Pattambi” were determined by assessing their nutritional composition, physical characteristics, cooking characteristic, as well as organoleptic qualities with Red Triveni as check. The effect of processing methods was also taken into consideration. The nutritional composition of pre – release rice cultures, with reference to calories, starch, protein, ash, calcium, phosphorus and iron were found to be high when compared to Red Triveni. The calorific value, and iron of the parboiled rice samples were also found to be higher. Among the physical characteristics all the pre – release rice cultures were observed to have low values for thousand grain weight and grain dimension, unlike for head rice yield and gelatinization temperature. A decrease on all the physical characteristics except thousand grain weight and head rice yield was observed in samples parboiled. Compared to Red Triveni pre – release rice cultures had obtained lower values for cooking characteristics such as optimum cooking time, elongation index, gruel loss and water uptake and higher value for elongation ratio, volume of expansion and amylose content. As a result of parboiling, optimum cooking time, and elongation ratio were found to increase and there was a decrease in elongation index, gruel loss, volume of expansion, water uptake, amylose content due to parboiling. The flour volume of all the pre – release rice cultures was comparatably high when compared to Red Triveni. Parboiled rice cultures had low flour yield when compared to raw cultures. The increase in batter yield after fermentation was more for Red Triveni when compared to the pre – release rice cultures. Acidity value for all the pre-release cultures were low when compared to Red Triveni. All the pre – release cultures were more acceptable as cooked rice (raw). Parboiling had a negative influence on cooked rice mainly because of less acceptable appearance and colour. Puttu was more acceptable for all the quality attributes in all the rice cultures including Red Triveni. Red Triveni was less acceptable because of its reddish colour. For idiappam, the quality attributes colour and appearance had obtained less score for Red Triveni, cultures 8770 and 871. Iddlimade from parboiled rice obtained lower score for the attributes colour, appearance and texture for all the cultures. Red Triveni had batter texture than all the cultures.

    Development of rational formulae to predict the advance and recession flow in border irrigation method

    An investigation was undertaken to develop the predictive relationship for water advance and recession in field borders with cow pea as the test crop. The experiment was conducted at the KCAET, Tavanur during February-April 1992. Border strips of 2 m width and 40m length were used for the study. The strips were laid out on three different slopes, 0.4 %, 0.3%, and 0.2%. Stream sizes of 4 Ips, 3 Ips, and 2 Ips per meter widths were used to irrigate the strips. There was nine treatments each replicated twice. Advance and recession times were noted at every 5 m distance from the upstream end of border. Advance and recession curves were plotted to draw conclusions on the effect of the three parameters viz stream size, slop and distance on advance and recession times. Uniformity of irrigation was also analysed for the different treatments and the treatment with 0.2% slope and 4 Ips/m width stream size showed the best uniformity. Multiple linear regression was done considering stream size, slope and distance from upstream end as independent variables. Advance and recession times were taken as dependent variables. Rational formulae to predict the advance and recession times were developed from the results of the multiple regression analysis.

    Relative involvement of men and women in dairying

    The objectives of the study were, to assess the extent of physical involvement and involvement in decision-taking by men and women in dairy management practices, to probe into the influence of women in the adoption of practices, to study the extent of adoption of selected aspects in dairying, the reasons for non-adoption/partial adoption of the practices, if any, to study the influence of selected socio-economic factors on adoption and to reveal the knowledge level of men and women about dairy management practices. The study was conducted among the members of the milk producers' co-operative society, Vilanganoor. The data were collected through personal interview using pre-tested interview schedule. Variables were measured using appropriate scales and suitable statistical tools were used for analysing the data. The study revealed that majority of husbands and wives had medium knowledge level. Husbands had significantly higher knowledge than wives in general even though there was no significant difference in the aspects of feeding, milking and breeding. In the aspects of housing and feeding the physical involvement of wives was significantly higher. In all the other aspects husbands' scores were significantly higher except in the case of milking where there was not much difference. In decision-taking, the husbands had significantly higher involvement in all aspects except feeding and milking. It was also noted that the children had important role in these two aspects in few households. There was a high rate of adoption of practices related to the selected aspects in dairying among the respondents (mean adoption index - 86.037). The physical involvement of women in the adoption and their involvement in decision-taking though not significant in general indicate their fairly good influence in the adoption of dairy husbandry practices. The correlation coefficients worked out revealed that out of the 13 socio-economic factors included in the study, only the land holding, experience in dairying, availability of professional help at farmers' premises and occupation had significant association with adoption. Experience in dairying had significant positive correlation with adoption of scientific selection in the case of husbands. Similarly land holding was positively and significantly associated with adoption of scientific housing. Availability of professional help at farmers' premises was significantly and negatively correlated with adoption of scientific housing, while it had highly significant positive correlation with adoption of scientific treatment. Occupation of husbands and adoption of practices in the aspect of feeding were highly significantly and negatively correlated. Occupation had significant negative correlation with adoption of aspects in general in the case of husbands. Since the value of multiple regression analysis was low no further analysis was done. The major constraints faced by farmers in the adoption of scientific practices were lack of money, high cost of feed, repeat breeding and non-availability of medicines

    Effect of organic amendments on plant parasitic nematodes and soil micro-organisms

    Field experiments conducted to evaluate the effect of neem and eupatorium leaves at two levels on plant parasitic and non-parasitic nematodes and soil micro-organisms in the rootzone of bhindi and cowpea in rainy and summer seasons revealed that neem and eupatorium leaf treatments (300g/plant or 15 t/ha) were found effective in controlling Helicotylenchus spp., R. reniformis and M. incognita in the rootzone. Lower dose (150g/plant) of neem was found sufficient to suppress the Helicotylenchus spp. In the rootzone of bhindi. Effect of these treatments persisted up to 75 D A S in rainy season and 45 DAS in summer season. The effect of lower doses also persisted up to 30 DAS. The predatory and saprophytic nematode population build up in the rootzone was enhanced by higher dose of eupatorium. The effect on predatory fauna persisted up to 75 D A S in the rootzone of two crops. But in cowpea the effect on saprophytic fauna persisted only up to 60 D A S. The microbial populations (bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes) were increased in the rootzone of bhindi and cowpea in two seasons by the application of eupatorium leaf at higher dose where as neem leaf (higher dose) reduced the microbial population. Only the fungal population increased by the application of neem leaf at higher dose during rainy season. There was seasonal variation in population build up of fungi and maximum effect was seen in rainy season. The biometric characters (number of leaves, height of plant, root weight and shoot weight) and yield of bhindi and cowpea increased significantly by the higher dose of neem and eupatorium leaf. For increasing the height, lower dose of neem, and, for yield lower dose of neem and eupatorium also were found effective. The population of nematodes in the roots at the termination of experiment was significantly reduced by the higher dose of neem and eupatorium in bhindi while lower dose was found effective protecting cowpea roots.

    Rhizobium inoculation and nutrient levels on nodulation and seedling growth in tree legumes

    An investigation entitled Rhizobium inoculation and nutrient levels on nodulation and seedling growth in tree legumes was carried out at College of Agriculture, Vellayani during August 1990 to July 1991. The investigation was carried out as three separate experiments. The main objective of Experiment I was to determine the effect of different scarification methods on the germination of some commonly grown and newly introduced legumes, the objective of Experiment II was to screen out the best among the native and exotic isolates of Rhizobium with different levels of phosphorus on the nodulation and seedling growth and the objective of Experiment III was to study the effect of Rhizobium inoculation, and nutrient levels on nodulation and seedling growth of tree legumes. The experiment (s) were carried out in a completely randomized design with five, three and four replications each for Experiments l, ll and lll respectively. Hot water treatment for three minutes was found to be effective for enhancing the germination in Acacia mangium, Paraserianthes falcataria and Sesbania grandiflora. Treatment with Con.Hcl for one minute recorded highest germination per cent in Cassia fistula. Germination percentage of 98.27 was recorded with Con.HNO3 treatment for 10 inutes. In Acaci’s Acacia Catechu and Cassia javanica maximum germination was obtained with Con.H2 SO4 treatment for five minutes, while that for one minute resulted in highest germination in Albizia moluccana. Exotic isolates, TAL 1868 and TAL 45 wire proved to be the best among the rhizobial isolates for Acacia and Albizia sp. Respectively with respect to growth and nodulation characterstics as compared to the local strains. Plant height, shoot dry weight and root dry weight were significantly influenced by phosphorus application. Nodule number per plant had increased from 0.67 to 1.33 in Acacia Arabica. Nitrogen application along with inoculation significantly influenced growth characters such as plant height, shoot dry weight and root dry weight. Maximum plant height was recorded due to application of nitrogen upto 20 kg ha-1 in Acacia Arabica and Acacia Catechu. Nitrogen application upto 20 kg ha-1resulted in highest shoot dry weight and root dry weight in both Acacia Catechu and Paraserianthes falcataria. Application of nitrogen did not increase nodule number per plant in all the tree species. However, nodule dry weight per plant increased with application of nitrogen up to 20 kg ha-1. Phosphorus application up to 50 kg ha-1 produced maximum shoot and root dry weights in Acacia catechu. Application of Phosphorus at 25 kg ha-1 resulted in maximum root dry weight in Acacia Arabica and Acacia catechu. Phosphorus application up to 25 kg ha-1 resulted in maximum number of nodules per plant in Acacia Arabica and acacia catechu. Highest nodules dry weight per plant was recorded with phosphorus application up to 25 kg ha-1 in Acacia catechu and Paraserianthes falcataria. Nitrogen application upto 20 kg ha -1 resulted in an increase in plant nitrogen content and reduction thereafter. Phosphorus application upto 25 kg ha -1. Resulted in an increase nitrogen content of plants and a reduction was noticed beyond 25 kg ha-1. Nitrogen application had significant influence on phosphorus content of plants in A Arabica and P. falcataria. Phosphorus application at 50 kg ha-1 gave highest phosphorus content in A. Arabica and A. catechu. It can be concluded that nitrogen and phosphorus application along with Rhizobium inoculation using specific strains is essential for better growth and nodulation of leguminous tree species.
