The present investigation on ‘Biochemical studies of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L) varieties grown in eastern UP’’ was carried out at Student’s Instructional Farm and in the laboratory of Department of Biochemistry. Chickpea genotypes were evaluated for various morphological and biochemical parameters, such as plant height, number of pod per plant, 100 seed weight, content, protein content, carbohydrate content, methionine content, tryptophan content, lysine content, total mineral content, reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar and total sugar content, and protein profiling by SDS-PAGE of chickpea seeds. Plant height ranged from 38.20-60.20 cm, number of pods per plant from 43-60, 100 seeds weight from 19.90-25.00, total carbohydrate from 54.10-62.81 per cent, protein from 21.80-24.30 per cent, total lysine from 6.49-8.10 g/16g/N, tryptophan from 0.11-0.23g/16g/N, Methionine from 1.83-2.65g/16g/N, total sugar from 4.50-5.19 per cent, reducing from 1.45-1.76 per cent, non reducing sugar from 2.80-3.43 per cent, total minerals from 1.93-3.28 per cent. This study about morphological and biochemical characteristics of chickpea genotypes have demonstrated differences across the genotype. The variation due to genotype have been screened out by exploring parameters and found suitability of wide uses of chickpea. It has resulted most promising varieties viz. Chickpea genotype BG-372, NDG-19-3, Vaibhav, RSG- 888, Pant-G-186, was found highest enriching of carbohydrate, protein, lysine, tryptophan, Methionine, total sugar, reducing sugar, total sugar, and total minerals content. NDG-19-3, BG-372, Pant-G-186 and RSG-888. Interestingly Vaibhav variety encountered rich quantum of carbohydrate, protein, sugar thereby is recommended for the users at growing and healthy age group of people. Variety BG-372 and NDG-19-3 will certainly lead as food supplement to the category of the people who seek more strengthing power and also support for intestinal/digestive disorder. Looking to the high importance of the these varieties/genotype of chickpea offer new guidelines to the nutritional expertise.
