University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru

University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore, a premier institution of agricultural education and research in the country, began as a small agricultural research farm in 1899 on 30 acres of land donated by Her Excellency Maharani Kempa Nanjammanni Vani Vilasa Sannidhiyavaru, the Regent of Mysore and appointed Dr. Lehmann, German Scientist to initiate research on soil crop response with a Laboratory in the Directorate of Agriculture. Later under the initiative of the Dewan of Mysore Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah, the Mysore Agriculture Residential School was established in 1913 at Hebbal which offered Licentiate in Agriculture and later offered a diploma programme in agriculture during 1920. The School was upgraded to Agriculture Collegein 1946 which offered four year degree programs in Agriculture. The Government of Mysore headed by Sri. S. Nijalingappa, the then Chief Minister, established the University of Agricultural Sciences on the pattern of Land Grant College system of USA and the University of Agricultural Sciences Act No. 22 was passed in Legislative Assembly in 1963. Dr. Zakir Hussain, the Vice President of India inaugurated the University on 21st August 1964.

STUDIES ON CHARACTERIZATION, HARDSEEDEDNESS AND SEED INVIGORATION ON SEED YIELD AND QUALITY OF BLACKGRAM (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) GENOTYPES
(UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES GKVK, BENGALURU, 2016-10-20) GANGARAJU, N.; Balakrishna, P.
A field study was conducted during Kharif 2015 to characterize 25 elite genotypes of blackgram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) based on morpho-biochemical markers. Among genotypes significant differences were observed for all traits. Further genotypes were grouped into black, brown and greenish brown based on seed colour. Again on leaflet shape character genotypes grouped as ovate shape (11), deltoid terminal shape (2) and lanceolate terminal shape (12). Based on plant height, the genotypes LBG-625, LBG-623, LBG-22 and K-07-07 are grouped as medium plant height (45-60 cm) and 21 genotypes grouped as short plant height (<45 cm). Considering the pod length two genotypes MBG- 207 and IC-281999 recorded small pod lengths. Based on protein content all the selected genotypes were characterized, among them MBG-1050 (26.40 %) and IC-281974 (24.90%) had recorded the highest protein when compared to other genotypes. Seeds treated with concentrated H2SO4 for 60 seconds recorded highest germination (94.67 %), seedling length (23.29 cm), seedling dry weight (18.90 mg), seedling vigour index I (2205) and II (1789) over control (54.00 %, 17.28 cm, 15.70 mg, 959 and 869, respectively). In field experiment revealed the effect of seed invigoration on seed yield and quality in DU-1 and Rashmi varieties of blackgram. The variety Rashmi invigorated with GA3 @ 50 ppm was superior in seed yield (1288 kgha-1) and quality germination (92.17%) etc., followed by KNO3 @ 0.5 %, over control. Seeds stored in supergrain bag with 2 g kg-1 thiram + spinosad 0.04 ml kg-1 recorded highest seed quality during 12 months of storage.
