University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore, a premier institution of agricultural education and research in the country, began as a small agricultural research farm in 1899 on 30 acres of land donated by Her Excellency Maharani Kempa Nanjammanni Vani Vilasa Sannidhiyavaru, the Regent of Mysore and appointed Dr. Lehmann, German Scientist to initiate research on soil crop response with a Laboratory in the Directorate of Agriculture. Later under the initiative of the Dewan of Mysore Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah, the Mysore Agriculture Residential School was established in 1913 at Hebbal which offered Licentiate in Agriculture and later offered a diploma programme in agriculture during 1920. The School was upgraded to Agriculture Collegein 1946 which offered four year degree programs in Agriculture. The Government of Mysore headed by Sri. S. Nijalingappa, the then Chief Minister, established the University of Agricultural Sciences on the pattern of Land Grant College system of USA and the University of Agricultural Sciences Act No. 22 was passed in Legislative Assembly in 1963. Dr. Zakir Hussain, the Vice President of India inaugurated the University on 21st August 1964.

    CHARACTERISATION AND MANAGEMENT OF BEAN COMMON MOSAIC VIRUS INFECTING FIELD BEAN

    The BCMV-Fb-GKVK isolate was mechanically sap transmissible onto field bean with a transmission rate of 93.75 per cent. Myzus persicae found more efficient in transmission of BCMV-Fb-GKVK isolate as compared to Aphis craccivora whereas, seed transmission ranged from 38-46 per cent and virus transmitted to different plant species under controlled conditions. Thermal inactivation point, dilution end point and longevity invitro of bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) was 65 °C, 10-6 -10-7 dilution and 4 days, respectively. The presence of rod shaped, long flexuous particle measuring about 760 nm in length typical to genus, Potyvirus was observed under electron microscope. The characterized BCMV-Fb-GKVK isolate genome had 10054 nucleotides and shared 97.27-99.51 per cent nucleotide identity with other BCMV isolates. The phylogenetic and sequence demarcation tool (SDT) analysis of characterized isolate based on nucleotide identity showed close grouping and clustered with other BCMV isolates like BCMV MS1 and BCMV NWA-1 infecting bush bean and common bean from Australia, respectively. The maximum disease incidence was recorded in the month of September (Kharif), November (Rabi) and March (Summer). Disease development was positively correlated with maximum temperature and morning relative humidity. Out of 447 genotypes screened against BCMV-Fb-GKVK isolate, one genotype (GLB-234) showed resistant and 246 genotypes exhibited moderately resistant reaction in field conditions. Similarly, under controlled conditions, two genotypes (GLP-67-1 and GLB-234) showed resistant and 196 genotypes exhibited moderately resistant reaction. Under glasshouse conditions, the maximum reduction of disease severity was noticed in Mirabilis jalapa (73.56 %) and Azadirachta indica (63.92 %) primed plants with higher defense enzyme activities of PO,PPO and PAL.
