University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru

University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore, a premier institution of agricultural education and research in the country, began as a small agricultural research farm in 1899 on 30 acres of land donated by Her Excellency Maharani Kempa Nanjammanni Vani Vilasa Sannidhiyavaru, the Regent of Mysore and appointed Dr. Lehmann, German Scientist to initiate research on soil crop response with a Laboratory in the Directorate of Agriculture. Later under the initiative of the Dewan of Mysore Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah, the Mysore Agriculture Residential School was established in 1913 at Hebbal which offered Licentiate in Agriculture and later offered a diploma programme in agriculture during 1920. The School was upgraded to Agriculture Collegein 1946 which offered four year degree programs in Agriculture. The Government of Mysore headed by Sri. S. Nijalingappa, the then Chief Minister, established the University of Agricultural Sciences on the pattern of Land Grant College system of USA and the University of Agricultural Sciences Act No. 22 was passed in Legislative Assembly in 1963. Dr. Zakir Hussain, the Vice President of India inaugurated the University on 21st August 1964.

    A field experiment was carried out at the Floriculture Unit of Kittur Rani Channamma College of Horticulture, Arabhavi, University of Agriculture Sciences,Dharwad during 1996-97 and 1997-98, to study the effect of organic,inorganic and in situ vermiculture on growth and flower yield of Jasmine. To achieve the objectives of the study, two separate experiments were carried out. In the first experiment, all the growth components of Jasminum sambac Ait. were better in the plants supplied with 50 per cent RDF along with vermicompost (2 or 4 or 8 kg/plant) and RDF + RDFYM (120:240:240 g NPK + 20 kg FYM/plant). The plants supplied with vermicompost alone (2 or 4 or 8 kg/plant) or in combination with 50 per cent RDF were early to initiate flowering. Good quality flower buds were produced by the plants which received 50 per cent RDF + Vermicompost (2 or 4 or 8 kg/plant) and in situ vermiculture (50 or 100 worms/plant) and RDF + RDFYM. The ftower yield was maximum in the plants which received RDF -I- RDFYM and 50 per cent RDF + vermicompost (2,4 or 8 kg per plant). In the second experiment, the growth parameters which were influenced mostly by N were optimum in lower levels of N, but luxur-iant in higher levels at the cost of flowering. The nutrient combination of 60:120:120 of per plant of NPK along with 20 kg FYM per plant was found optimum to achieve the optimum growth and flower yields in the first two years of planting in Jasminum auricuiatum Vahl.

    STUDIES ON MUTANTS VIS A VIS DROUGHT TOLERANCE AND MICROPROPAGATION IN ACID LIME Cv. KAGZI

    Experiments on field performance of induced non-systemic mutants of acid lime Cv. Kagzi {Citrus aurantifolia Swingl.) were carried out at the Main Research Station, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during the years 1994-97 for their drought tolerance and drought acclimation potential of selected mutants through morphological, physiological and biochemical parameters at seedling stage. Irradiation as mutagen helped in creating variability as revealed by Mahalanobis D2 analysis. The genetic diversity reflected in the distribution of the mutants into six clusters, with highest genetic diversity between cluster II and cluster IV (51.94). Among the mutants tested for field performance, mutants Mr2 and Mi-22 topped for their yielding ability. The different yielding ability of the mutants is primarily ascribed to the number of fruits retained per shoot and the fruit size. In the drought acclimation potential studies, it was found that the parameters that could be adopted to screen the mutants for drought resistance are length and density of roots, root shoot ratio, leaf area and duration among the morphological parameters; total dry matter, stomatal frequency, relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll content, chlorophyll stability index (CSI) among the physiological parameters and free proline, epicuticular wax content, sugars, starch, protein and nitrate reductase activity among biochemical parameters. The combination of these parameters would be more appropriate to isolate than using them independently. The fruit quality of M|-2 and M|-22 was also not inferior in comparison to others with higher juice volume, weight and thin papery peel. Considering the yield potentialities, tolerance to drought and the fruit quality parameters, M|-2 and M|-22 mutants were found promising. Studies were also conducted on standardization of protocol for micropropagation of the drought tolerant mutant Mr22. The highest number of shoots per explant was observed in MS medium containing 0.5 mg/1 BAP and 0.1 mg/1 NAA. Better rooting of micro-shoots was observed in the basal MS media containing I.O mg/1 IB A.
