University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore, a premier institution of agricultural education and research in the country, began as a small agricultural research farm in 1899 on 30 acres of land donated by Her Excellency Maharani Kempa Nanjammanni Vani Vilasa Sannidhiyavaru, the Regent of Mysore and appointed Dr. Lehmann, German Scientist to initiate research on soil crop response with a Laboratory in the Directorate of Agriculture. Later under the initiative of the Dewan of Mysore Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah, the Mysore Agriculture Residential School was established in 1913 at Hebbal which offered Licentiate in Agriculture and later offered a diploma programme in agriculture during 1920. The School was upgraded to Agriculture Collegein 1946 which offered four year degree programs in Agriculture. The Government of Mysore headed by Sri. S. Nijalingappa, the then Chief Minister, established the University of Agricultural Sciences on the pattern of Land Grant College system of USA and the University of Agricultural Sciences Act No. 22 was passed in Legislative Assembly in 1963. Dr. Zakir Hussain, the Vice President of India inaugurated the University on 21st August 1964.

    INFLUENCE OF SPACINGAND NUTRITION ON GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF LETTUCE (Lactuca sativa L.) UNDER PROTECTED CULTIVATION

    An experiment was conducted to study the “Influence of spacing and nutrition on growth, yield and quality of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) under protected cultivation” at ICAR- Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hadonahalli, Doddaballapur Taluk, Bengaluru Rural District during rabi 2021. The results revealed that plant height (38.12 cm) and head yield per hectare (304.38 q ha-1) was recorded significantly higher at 45 cm × 22.5 cm spacing. Higher number of leaves (18.26), plant spread (32.54 cm), leaf area (290.28 cm2), fresh weight (407.02 g), dry weight (29.30 g), head girth (12.93 cm), yield per plant (407.02 g), chlorophyll content (48.40), vitamin-c (40.43), firmness (2.75), shelf life (9 days), plant uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (160.16, 72.85 and 127.13 kg ha-1, respectively) was recorded at 45 cm × 45 cm spacing. The higher plant height (37.65 cm), number of leaves (18.51), plant spread (32.33 cm), leaf area (268.42 cm2), fresh weight (388.45 g), dry weight (27.63 g), head girth (12.80 cm), yield per plant (388.45 g), yield per hectare (280.63 q ha-1), chlorophyll content (47.33), vitamin-c (40.19), firmness (2.50), shelf life (8 days), plant uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (158.09, 71.37 and 127.94 kg ha-1) was recorded at 125% RDF. However, higher net returns (Rs. 10,26,435 /-) and higher cost benefit ratio (3.07) were recorded in 45 cm × 22.5 cm spacing + 125 % RDF.
