University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore, a premier institution of agricultural education and research in the country, began as a small agricultural research farm in 1899 on 30 acres of land donated by Her Excellency Maharani Kempa Nanjammanni Vani Vilasa Sannidhiyavaru, the Regent of Mysore and appointed Dr. Lehmann, German Scientist to initiate research on soil crop response with a Laboratory in the Directorate of Agriculture. Later under the initiative of the Dewan of Mysore Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah, the Mysore Agriculture Residential School was established in 1913 at Hebbal which offered Licentiate in Agriculture and later offered a diploma programme in agriculture during 1920. The School was upgraded to Agriculture Collegein 1946 which offered four year degree programs in Agriculture. The Government of Mysore headed by Sri. S. Nijalingappa, the then Chief Minister, established the University of Agricultural Sciences on the pattern of Land Grant College system of USA and the University of Agricultural Sciences Act No. 22 was passed in Legislative Assembly in 1963. Dr. Zakir Hussain, the Vice President of India inaugurated the University on 21st August 1964.

    The present study "Structure and Performance of Livestock Markets in Southern Karnataka" was conducted with the major objectives of the examining the growth and composition of livestock markets, structure of livestock markets, factors considered in price determination of livestock, performance of livestock markets and problems in marketing of livestock. Sixty sellers and sixty buyers drawn randomly from four regulated markets and two annual fairs of Bangalore and Mysore revenue divisions of Karnataka constituted the sample for analysing livestock markets for the reference period 2006-07. Tabular and statistical analysis formed the analytical frame of the study.

    ECONOMICS OF PRODUCTION AND MARKETING OF IRRIGATED ONION IN KOLAR DISTRICT

    Onion is the major bulb crops of the world and an important commercial vegetable crop. Karnataka occupies 5th place in area (34.50 thousand hectares) and production (270 thousand tonnes) and however the productivity (7.83 tonnes per hectare) is veiy low. The study was conducted in Kolar district where onion is grown in large scale. Farmers of this district are substituting onion for potato, ragi, groundnut and other vegetables. Therefore, this study was conducted with an overall objective of estimating comparative economics, resource allocation, marketing channel and market integration of Onion. Primary data from sixty Onion cultivators of Kolar district were obtained so as to have 30 small farmers and 30 big farmers. The total cost of cultivation of Onion per acre for small, large and pooled categories of respondents were Rs.10398.80, Rs.13061.13 and Rs.12044.13 respectively. While, the average gross returns realized per acre by selling the onion by these respondents were Rs.25998.67, Rs.31714.99 and Rs.29225.48 respectively.
