Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar

Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University popularly known as HAU, is one of Asia's biggest agricultural universities, located at Hisar in the Indian state of Haryana. It is named after India's seventh Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh. It is a leader in agricultural research in India and contributed significantly to Green Revolution and White Revolution in India in the 1960s and 70s. It has a very large campus and has several research centres throughout the state. It won the Indian Council of Agricultural Research's Award for the Best Institute in 1997. HAU was initially a campus of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. After the formation of Haryana in 1966, it became an autonomous institution on February 2, 1970 through a Presidential Ordinance, later ratified as Haryana and Punjab Agricultural Universities Act, 1970, passed by the Lok Sabha on March 29, 1970. A. L. Fletcher, the first Vice-Chancellor of the university, was instrumental in its initial growth.

    Emotional Maturity and Achievement Motivation of Rural Adolescents of Working and Non- working Mothers

    The present study was undertaken in Hisar district of Haryana state. Eighteen govt. and eighteen private higher/senior secondary schools were selected from 18 villages which were selected purposively from Agroha and Adampur block were selected as per the demand of study. A study was undertaken on a sample of 150 adolescents in the age range of 15-18 years which comprised 75 adolescents of working mothers and 75 adolescents of non- working mothers. Emotional maturity, achievement motivation and family environment scale developed by Singh and Bhargava 1991, DeoMohan achievement motivation scale 2002 and family environment scale by Bhatia and Chadda 1993 was used to assess the emotional maturity and achievement motivation and effect of family environment on emotional maturity and achievement motivation of adolescents. The finding revealed significant differences in all aspects of emotional maturity i.e. emotional instability (Z=5.00*), emotional regression (Z=4.48*), social maladjustment (Z=3.48*), personality disintegration (Z=5.30*), lack of independence (Z=2.81*) and total emotional maturity (Z=5.70*) on the basis of mother’s occupational status. Significant positive correlation existed between adolescent’s achievement motivation and family environment aspects i.e. cohesion, expressiveness and independence. Whereas there was a nonsignificant correlation was observed between adolescent’s achievement motivation with conflict, acceptance and caring, organization and control. The results further revealed positive and significant correlation between achievement motivation with mother’s education and occupation as well as family size and no. of siblings of the respondents.
