    DEVELOPMENT OF ORGANIC BRIQUETTES FROM SLAUGHTERHOUSE WASTE AS NUTRIENT SOURCE FOR PLANTGROWTH

    A study was conducted to develop organic briquettes using wastes originating from slaughterhouses and to investigate its potential as a nutrient source for plant growth. Dried rumen contents were mixed with fresh blood collected after bleeding of animals in different proportions and the mixture was dried using tray drier. The dried rumen content-blood mixture was further mixed with commercially available coir pith in 12 different proportions. The briquetting was done in hydraulic biomass briquetting machine. Each briquette had 5 cm diameter and weighed 30- 40 grams. Each treatment was analysed for pH, moisture, electrical conductivity, organic carbon, total nitrogen, carbon: nitrogen ratio, total phosphorus and total potassium. Organic briquettes having rumen content with 100 per cent blood and 80 per cent coir pith (T10) recorded the highest total nitrogen (1.76±0.09 per cent), total phosphorus (1.52±0.07 per cent) and total potassium (1.15±0.11 per cent) content. Five treatments for plant growth studies were selected based on the criteria that each selected treatment had highest values for at least two of the three elements viz. nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The selected treatments comprised of dried rumen contents mixed with blood (over and above the weight of rumen contents) and coir pith in the following proportions: 80:90 (T5), 80:70 (T7), 80:60 (T8), 100:80 (T10) and 100:60 (T12). Pot experiment using selected briquettes was carried out to determine their effects on growth parameters and yield attributes of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). Nutrient release pattern of the selected organic briquettes was also studied. Plant height (136.87±2.58 cm), number of leaves (55.30±1.90), number of flowers (34.70±1.03), number of fruits (32.70±1.00), weight of the fruits (15.35±0.18 gm) and total fruit yield per plant (0.501±0.17 kg) were significantly (p<0.05) higher in T10. Days to first flowering was lower (33.90±0.50) and length of the fruits was higher (15.21±0.11 cm) in T10, but these were not significantly different from T8 and T12. Hence, among the five selected treatments, the most desirable plant growth parameters and yield attributes were observed for T10. The availability of nutrients in the medium was relatively lower during first two months after planting (MAP) okra, which significantly (p<0.05) increased at four MAP, resulting in better plant growth and fruit yield. The study showed that organic briquettes as plant growth supplement can be developed using rumen contents, blood and coir pith as an eco friendly process, which are compact, easy to transport and market, and suitable for grow bag cultivation and garden nurseries.
