Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

    Date palm being greatly heterozygous and heterogeneous in nature, breeding is very difficult due to dioecious, long juvenile phase and life cycle. Strategy for improvement of fruit yield and quality mainly includes efficient pollination technique, selection of suitable pollinator with metaxenic effect and improved cultural practices. The present investigation was carried out to find out effect of pollen sources on fruit quality and quantity in ADP-1 and Barhee used as female cultivar. The experiment was conducted in Completely Randomized Block Design with three replications. The experimental material composed of male selected from different regions of Gujarat and female parent located at RRS, AAU, Anand and Narayan farm, Nani-Reldi, Bhuj, Kutch, Gujarat. For determining pollination efficiency, in vitro pollen studies comprising of ultrastructure studies of pollen grains and in vitro germination assay were conducted along with stigma receptivity test using 6 % hydrogen peroxide.

    TECHNOLOGY FOR DEVELOPMENT OF READY-TO-REHYDRATE AND EAT TYPE OF RICE AND PULSE PRODUCTS

    Experiments were carried out for standardizing the processing and storage for production of ready to rehydrate type cooked rice, chickpea and kidney bean. Water to grain ratio (1.5-2.5), soaking time (0-90 min) and cooking time (0-30 min) for rice and water to grain ratio (2.0-3.0), soaking time (8-16 h) and cooking time (0-30 min) of chickpea and kidney bean were evaluated for water uptake, hardness, stickiness and solid loss. Developed process was optimized on the basis of maximum value of water uptake and stickiness and minimum value of hardness. The optimized conditions were water to rice ratio of 2:1 with soaking time of 60 min and cooking time of 20 min; water to chickpea ratio of 3:1 with soaking time of 12 h and cooking time of 30 min and water to kidney bean ratio of 3:1 with soaking time of 12 h and cooking time of 25 min.

    Six crossbred cows (Holstein Friesian × Kankrej) were investigated in their advance stage of gestation period for Hematological parameter, Phagocytic Activity (PA) of Blood and Milk, Mitogen Con A and LPS induced Lymphocytic Proliferation Response (LPR) of Blood and Milk, SCC, Fat, Protein, SNF, Lactose and Hormones. Blood was collected on days -30, -15, -7 and -3 before calving, on the day of calving and on days 3, 7, 15 and 30 after calving while milk collected on the day of calving and 3, 7, 15, 30 day after calving.

    This study was carried out on vaginal secretions/aspirates of infertile (acyclic and endometritic) crossbred cows from field and healthy cyclic as well as pregnant crossbred cows of LRS, AAU, Anand with the objectives (i) to identify the vaginal microorganisms based on routine cultural and culture-independent (metagenomics) methods, (ii) to monitor plasma progesterone, estrogen, total protein, total cholesterol, calcium and inorganic phosphorus profile, and (iii) to find out the association of vaginal metabiota with circulatory levels of gonadal steroids, if any. The work was carried out on total 36 crossbred cows covering six each regular cyclic (proestrus, estrus, metestrus, diestrus), acyclic, endometritic and 3, 6 and 9 months pregnant animals.

    STUDY ON CERTAIN SUMMER MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON PERFORMANCE OF CROSSBRED CALVES

    The present experiment was conducted to study on certain summer management practices on performance of crossbred calves in middle Gujarat agro climatic condition during summer season (1st April to 15th July) at Livestock Research Station, College of Veterinary science and Animal Husbandry, Anand Agricultural University, Anand, Gujarat. The study was conducted on 18 Young (80-100 kg) farm born Crossbred calves of Livestock research station, Veterinary College, Anand. The experimental animals were maintained on ICAR feeding standard (1998). The chaffed hybrid nippier, Juwar straw and pelleted concentrate Amul Dane was offered as per the requirement of animals for DCP and TDN to fulfill the dry matter requirement. The clean water was provided ad lib thrice time in a day in plastic tub. The experimental animals were divided in to two treatment groups based on body weight comprising of nine animals in each treatment viz. T1: Control (Housing under asbestos roofed shed) and T2: (Housing under asbestos roofed shed where top surface of roof will be painted white and animals was applied mist through foggers).

    The present research work was carried out to know the incidence of MD in different native and cross-bred strains maintained at Poultry Research Station, AAU, Anand. The study comprised of epidemiological information in relation to mortality due to MD with respect to strain, age, sex, season and month wise susceptibility, gross and histopathological examination of different organs, detection of Marek’s Disease Virus (MDV) by PCR, genetic characterization of the field virus by sequencing the BamHI-H fragment of MDV genome and genotyping of MHC-B haplotypes associated with susceptibility or resistance of Marek’s disease.

    Eight Indigenous lambs and kids were investigated for their physiological, haematological, biochemical and hormonal profiles from birth to three months of age. Physiological parameters were recorded on the day of blood collection two times at 7:30 AM and 2:30 PM. Blood samples were collected on 0, 7, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 days after birth.
