Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

    USE OF SELECTED LACTIC STARTER STRAINS FOR PREPARATION OF MISTI DAHI FROM COW AND BUFFALO MILK

    The study was planned and conducted to select suitable strains of lactic acid bacteria from market samples of misti dahi for preparation of the product from cow and buffalo milk and to decide the optimum level of total solids for the product and to test the performance of the selected cultures and enhance the shelf-life of the product for increasing its commercial from Dr. Cox, U.K. and the other LF40, a Christian Hansen’s mixed strain culture were included in the trials. Thermization treatment of the finished product was planned to evaluate its effect on the shelf-life of the product and the effect of such treatment on the viable lactic count and on the beta-galactosidase activity.

    ENERGY CONSERVATION IN DAIRY PLANT ILLUMINATION

    Satisfactory illumination of the milk plant is important since it not only increases safety and improves efficiency but also makes it possible for workman to operate with greater ease, comfort and speed. Many dairies today are working at lower than the desired level of illumination. Various problems faced by the lighting industry are the increasing power demand, voltage fluctuations, reduced lamp life, inefficient illumination, lighting fitting corrosion, electrical shock hazards and continuing search of cost effective high performance illumination system. To overcome these problems illumination engineers have recommended to improve the illumination system design and to use efficient light sources.

    INHERITANCE OF QUANTITATIVE CHARACTERS IN Gossypium hirsutum L. x G. barbadense L. HYBRIDS

    The experiment was conducted at Plant Breeding Research Farm, Anand during 1984-85, Six generations viz., P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 developed from two crosses :(1) H-51-3 x SUVIN and (2) H-51-3 x S.I.L.S-9 were studied. The parents were of species Gossypium hirsutum L. (H-51-3) and G. barbadense (SUVIN and S.I.L.S-9). Two rows each of P1, P2 and check four each of F1, BC1 and BC2 and six rows of F2 were planted in compact family block design.

    STUDIES ON CATOPSILIA PYRANTHE LINN. (LEPIDOPTERA: PIERIDAE) A PEST OF SENNA, CASSIA ANGUSTIFOLIA VAHL. IN ANAND (GUJARAT)

    Captopsilia pyranthe Linn. (Lepidoptera : Pieridae) has been reported as a serious defoliator of a medicinal crop, Senna, Cassia angustifolia Vahl. Studies on its biology, seasonal abundance, natural enemies and chemical control were carried out at Anand Campus of Gujarat Agricultural University during 1983-84 and 1984-85. Biological observations revealed that, the pest lays eggs singly on the foliage which hatch out in two days. It passed through five distinct larval instars to complete its development and duration of each instar was on an average 1.20, 1.12, 1.32, 1.68 and 2.83 days during June (when average minimum and maximum temperatures were 30.49 °C and 38.00 °C and relative humidity was 68.3 per cent and 1.73, 1.33, 1.60, 1.93 and 3.13 days during September and October (when average minimum amd maximum temperatures were 27.71 °C and 34.75 °C respectively and relative humidity was 59.09 per cent) respectively.

    ASSESSMENT OF CROP WATER STRESS IN WHEAT AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO YIELD

    A field experiment with six different irrigation treatments was conducted during the rabi season of the year 1985-86 with the broad-based objectives of evaluating the foasibility of using canopy temperature as an indicator of crop water stress of wheat experiencing different stressed conditions by studying the relationship between canopy temperature and evapotranspiration and comparing the performance of the stress indices namely “Stress Degree Day (SDD) and Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI)” in relation to the yield of wheat in Anand conditions.

    STUDY ON AGITATION PARAMETERS IN ISOLATION OF MILK FAT FROM BUFFALO SOUR MILK

    In the present work, the process of shurning buffalo sour milk by agitation was studied. Souring was done by culturing as well by natural curdling. No difference was observed in behaviour of cultured milk and naturally curdled milk in respect of fat recovery. Fat percentage of buffalo sour milk was varied from a level of 3 per cent to 9 per cent. Agitation was produced by stirring sour milk with a small variable speed stirrer. Dimensional analysis was employed to get better understanding of the churning process and thereby to develop a relationship among the parameters involved in the process. The results of various experimental were plotted using the relationship obtained from the dimensional analysis.

    Sugarcane is one of the most important food-cum-cash crops of our country. With the significant advancement in the field of agriculture and several efforts made by various agencies to carry new technologies to the farmers fields, our goal of self sufficiency in production has not yet been achieved. This is due to the fact that a wide gap still exists between available technology and its ultimate adopters and low adoption of technology by the farmers due to several adoption problems. Hence, the present study entitled "A study on the extent of adoption of recommended sugarcane cultivation technology in Rohtak district of Haryana state" was conducted to know some of the factors which effect the adoption.
