STUDY OF REGIONAL ANALGESIC PROCEDURES OF FORELIMB IN CATTLE AND BUFFALOES
    (AAU, Anand, 1979) BHOJANI, S. A.; Mannari, M. N.
Regional analgesic procedures are of paramount importance in bovine practice because of anatomic pecularities of tne bovines. Practicing veterinarian is often called upon to attend to limb affections involving surgical Intervension. This entails the use of regional analgesic procedures. At present techniques of anaesthetising the forelimbs are very few. Three methods of regional analgesic blocks on forelimb viz., cervical epidural segmental block, brachial plexus block and cervical paravertebral block were studied. The cervical epidural segmental block was practiced, on 6 buffalo calves and all of them died. This may be due to bilateral paralysis of the phrenic nerve. The brachial plexus block was carried out successfully on 24 occasions in adult cattle and buffalo calves. The site, dose, induction time, duration and area of anaesthesia are discussed. The study indicated failures among obese animals. The cervical paravertebral block was tried on 35 occasions and success was seen only on 25 occasions. The site, dose, induction time, duration and area of anaesthesia are discussed. The effects on rectal temperature, pulse and respiratory rate and blood pressure are also noted. The present study indicated that the brachial plexus block is the method of choice for anaesthetising the forelimbs.
