Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

    The livestock sector plays an important role in the rural economy of India. Gujarat is one of the leading states contributing remarkable share in rapidly growing livestock sector. The contribution of livestock sector in total GDP of Gujarat during the year 2010-11 was 4.75% and its share in GDP of agriculture and allied sector was 27.41%. Average 15-16% growth rate was observed in the contribution of A.H. in state GDP during the year 2010-11.The important rural issues like woman empowerment, livestock based livelihood, poverty alleviation alternate source of income, domestic nutritional security, child undernourishment, checking farmers, suicide etc can be very well addressed by strengthening animal husbandry. Role of veterinary professionals is crucial in proper development of livestock sector which is an important segment of rural economy of India. Veterinary students of today are the veterinary professionals of tomorrow who will serve the field of veterinary and animal husbandry either through public sector, NGOs or at their own. To be well equipped for veterinary profession, the attitude of veterinary students towards veterinary education plays important role. Hence, it becomes worthwhile to study the attitude of the veterinary students towards veterinary education and how it is influenced by different characteristics of the students. Further the motives of veterinary students to join the veterinary education also affect in shaping their profession in future.

    The mythical Kamdhenu symbolises livestock as a perennial source of wealth. Traditional wisdom had recognised the importance of livestock not only as producer of cash income but more importantly as providers of traction, manure, fuel and food in India. In small households livestock is an insurance against crop failure. A large number of farmers in India depend on animal husbandry for their livelihood. In addition to supplying milk, meat, eggs, wool and hides, animals, mainly bullocks, are the major sources of power for both farmers. Livestock is an integral part of Indian agricultural economy and plays a multifaceted role in providing livelihood support to the rural population. Livestock sector apart from contributing to national economy in general and to agricultural economy in particular, also provides employment generation opportunities, asset creation, coping mechanism against crop failure and social and financial security. Livestock is the main source of animal protein for the population.

    The problem of zoonoses is multi-factorial and one of the major constraints that all organizations have in controlling zoonoses is the lack of resources. However, much can be done by education and in particular by increasing the awareness of different health professionals and facilitating communication and collaboration between veterinary, public health and agricultural personnel. Looking to all above things, the investigation entitled “Determinants of Knowledge About Zoonotic Diseases of Dogs among Dog Owners” was carried out with the following specific objectives. 1) To study the profile of dog owners. 2) To study the level of knowledge of dog owners about zoonotic diseases. 3) To study the common practices adopted for prevention of some of the zoonotic diseases by the dog owners. 4) To ascertain the relationship between the profile of dog owners and their level of knowledge of zoonotic diseases. 5) To ascertain the relationship between the profile of dog owners and their level of adoption for prevention of zoonotic diseases
