HETEROSIS AND COMBINING ABILITY STUDIES IN FORAGE MAIZE [Zea mays L.]
(AAU, Anand, 2013) DATIR SUNITA MAHADEO; Dr. M. M. Bhatt
Maize [Zea mays L.] is one of the third most important cereals next to wheat and rice in the world with respect to area and production. Maize is also considered to be a valuable cereal forage crop. It is one of the most important dual-purpose crops grown in kharif, rabi and summer for grain as well as fodder purpose. The present investigation consisted of 14 parents (4 lines + 10 testers), and 40 F1s were developed in a line x tester fashion. The experiment was laid out in a randomize block design with three replications at Main Forage Research Station, A.A.U., Anand during kharif season of 2011. The objectives of this study were to investigate the per se performance, magnitude of heterosis, combining ability and type of gene action for 15 different traits. Significant difference among parents and hybrids were observed for various traits under study.
