Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

GAMMA-RAY INDUCED GENETIC VARIABILITY, POLLEN DISPERSAL AND SEED SET IN ISABGUL (PLANTAGO OVATA FORSK)
    (AAU, Anand, 1979) PATEL, DIWAKER R.; DALAL, K. C.
Field experiments were conducted to study radio sensitivity of isabgul to gamma-rays, the effect of length, type, mode and duration of enclosures on seed set, the desirability of powerloom cloth bag for selfing whole plant and pollen dispersal in isabgul crop. (1) In M2 generation, positive significant shifts in means were observed for characters length of spike and number of tillers per plant. Mutagenic treatments of gamma rays increased variability in M2 generation in the progenies for most of the characters. Early maturing types were obtained from irradiated populations. The highest values of genetic variance accompanied by corresponding genetic parameters were observed at both, higher and lower doses of gamma rays for dofferent characters. Forty and eighty Kr doses of gamma rays were most effective in inducing variability for maturity and synchronous flowering. However, 40 Kr dose of gamma rays was suggested for improvement in other characters.

GENE EFFECT STUDIES IN BIDI TOBACCO
    (AAU, Anand, 1979) B., SASIKUMAR.; JAISANI, B. G.
Bidi tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is one of the important cash crops of India, especially Gujarat. Considering, the important of tobacco in national economy it is but proper that due attention is paid for its development as well as qualitative and quantitative improvement. But unlike fcv tobacco, information on the genetics of bidi tobacco is very scanty. A sound breeding methodology rests on the knowledge of gene effects governing yield and other agro-morphological characters as well as the genetic variability present in the base material. Hence, this study was undertaken to know the gene effects governing yield and other agro-morphological characters, genetic divergance existing among the bidi tobacco genotypes and genetic advance for cured leaf yield.

ESTIMATES OF VARIABILITY, CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS AND PATH COEFFICIENT ANALYSIS IN BLACKGRAM (Nigna mungo (L.) Hepper)
    (AAU, Anand, 1979) Patel, S. T.; Shah, R. M.
The estimates of extent of variability and direct and indirect effects of different yield components on yield of grain in different strains of blackgram are of great value to breeders in making effective selections for high yield potential and other economical characters. The present study therefore was undertaken to estimate variability, correlation coefficients and path coefficients in this crop. Twenty strains of diverse origin of blackgram were grown in Randomized Block Design with four replications during the monsoon season of 1978 at Plant Breeding station of Gujarat Agricultural University, Anand Campus, Anand. The variations existing for different quantitative characters including genetic variability were estimated. The association between yield and it’s components as well as among the different characters themselves were worked out.
