Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

    This study was conducted on exotic crossbred (HFCB) and indigenous (Gir, Sahiwal and Tharparkar) donor animals of NDDB, Anand, whereas, recipients were from Livestock Research Station, AAU, Anand (for exotic crossbred embryos) and NDDB, Anand (for indigenous cattle embryos). The aims of the study were, first, to know the embryo production rate from oocytes recovered by Ovum Pick-Up (OPU) from live donor animals and fertilization rate by frozen conventional and sex-sorted semen, and second, to determine pregnancy rate by transferring embryos produced in vitro by conventional and sex-sorted semen in recipient animals.

    STUDY ON PREVENTION OF CONCEPTION AND MEDICAL TERMINATION OF PREGNANCY IN BITCHES

    This investigation was carried out, on a total of 19 bitches comprising different breeds, age, body weight and parity, covering two breeding seasons from August, 2019 to May, 2020, with an aim to study the efficacy and side effects of diethylstilbestrol (DES) for prevention of conception in mis-mated bitches (n=8; Group-1) and combination of cloprostenol (PGF2α) and cabergoline for termination of pregnancy in pregnant bitches (n=6; Group-2), with a non-compliance for 5 bitches.

    STUDIES ON INCIDENCE, DIAGNOSIS AND SURGICAL INTERVENTION OF PYOMETRA IN CANINES

    This investigation was taken up on ten bitches affected with pyometra (8 open and 2 closed pyometra) and eight normal healthy bitches presented for spaying/ neutering at the Veterinary Clinical Complex, AAU, Anand including screening of past three years records of all canine clinical cases (9963) attended to know the prevalence of various reproductive disorders specially pyometra. Other objectives were to study and compare the diagnostic efficacy of ultrasonography, radiography and gynaeco-clinical methods in selected cases of canine pyometra, and to evaluate and compare haemato-biochemical profiles before and after surgical intervention as well as microbiological aspects and histopathological changes in the uteri of pyometric and normal bitches following surgical management.

    This study was carried out on semen of 3 mature Gir cattle and 3 Murrah buffalo bulls (5-8 years old) to investigate the comparative efficacy of Tris-citric acid-fructose-egg yolk-glycerol (TFYG) extender fortified with Mifepristone (10 μg/ml), Sericin (5 mg/ml) and Taurine (4 mg/ml) for cryopreservation of semen with respect to sperm quality, CTC pattern, oxidative markers (SOD, GPx, MDA) and sperm motion characteristics/ kinematics of both fresh and frozen-thawed semen.
