Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

STUDY ON INHERITANCE OF SERUM ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE LEVEL AND ITS ASSOCIATIONS WITH SOME ECONOMIC TRAITS IN TWO WLH LINES
    (AAU, Anand, 1982) SHUKLA, RAJENDRAKUMAR B.; Shukla, R. K.
The present study was undertaken to know the inheritance of serum alkaline phosphatase level (SAP level) and its associations with some economic traits in two WLH lines. Records of 160 pullets of M line and 192 pullets of V line from Poultry Breeding Farm, Makaraba, Ahmedabad were available for present study. Serum samples were collected at 10 weeks of age and SAP levels were estimated in K.A.Units. The same were found to be 196.91±13.90 and 240.47±14.95 K.A.Units/100 ml of serum in M line and V line respectively. Pullets of both the lines differed significantly for SAP level, 20th week body weight (BW20), egg weight (EW), egg number (EN) and egg mass (EM).

STUDY OF GENETIC AND PHENOTYPIC PARAMETERS OF SOME ECONOMIC TRAITS IN TWO WHITE LEGHORN STRAINS AND ITS CROSS
    (AAU, Anand, 1982) DEDHIA, CHANDRAKANT K.; Shukla, R. K.
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the genetic architecture of two pure lines of WLH, viz., M and V - lines and also M x V cross, maintained at Regional Poultry Breeding Farm Makarba (Ahmedabad). This breeding stock was under Intra Population Selection for six generations. The mean BW8, in grams, were found to be 410.91 & 426.61 in M7 and M8; 433.23 & 443.40 in V7 & V8; and 461.50 & 447.08 in C7 & C8 respectively. The mean BW20 for these genetic groups were 1105.06 & 1014.54; 1185.41 & 1073.98; and 1295.96 & 1109.56 grams respectively. The mean AFE (in days) were found to be 171.18 & 159.19; 174.92 & 157.47; 155.95 & 162.10; and mean EW in grams were 46.30 & 44.15; 50.91 & 47.06; and 52.93 & 45.89 respectively.

STUDIES ON RELATIVE EFFICIENCY OF DIFFERENT METHODS OF INTRAPOPULATION SELECTION IN TWO WHITE LEGHORN STRAINS
    (AAU, Anand, 1982) GHASURA, MOHMEDKHAN I.; Shukla, R. K.
Present investigation was carried out to evaluate different method of intrapopulation selection in M and V line maintained at Regional Poultry Breeding Farm, Makarba (Ahmedabad) with particular reference to selection for Egg number (EN) and rate of lay (RL). Pedigree records of 682 and 718 pullets of M line and 671 and 718 pullets of V line for the year 1978-79 and 1979-80 respectively were utilised for present investigation. Mean of EN were found to be 60.32±0.62; 68.16±0.776 for M line and 53.20±0.5976; 64.14±2.9578 for V line for both the years respectively. The same for RL were found to be 0.5439±0.0055, 0.5573±0.0059 for M line and 0.5039±0.0050; 0.5169±0.0074 for V line.

A STUDY OF GENETIC AND PHENOTYPIC PARAMETERS OF SOME ECONOMIC TRAITS OF JERSEY CATTLE OF NORTH WESTERN PART OF INDIA
    (AAU, Anand, 1980) VYAS, ASHOKKUMAR S.; Shukla, R. K.
The present study was undertaken to know the adaptability of Jersey cattle in terms of economic traits in North-western part of India. 417 records of bull mother farms at Anand, Bidaj and Bassi were analysed. Overall AFC was found to be 772.69 ±5.31 days with majority of heifers calving in groups of above 701 days. Herd differences were significant. Effect of AFC on FLY, SP and CI was found to be significant. Overall correlations and regressions of FLY, SLY, DP and CI on AFC were significant.
