India is the world’s largest producer and consumer of milk accounting for 20 percent of world production. Milk production in the country grew at 6.7 percent to 176.4 million tonnes in 2017-18 as against 165.4 million tonnes in 2016-17, which was more than double the growth of world milk production. It improved the per capita availability of milk to 374 grams per day. The dairy sector in India has demonstrated significant growth in the past 10 years with milk production increasing at the rate of 4.8 percent CAGR. India’s dairy cooperatives have played a key role in expanding milk and milk-product marketing. Co-operatives & private dairies still procure only about 20percent of the milk produced in the country, while 34 percent is sold in the unorganized market and about 46 percent is consumed locally even though India’s dairy industry is expected to maintain growth at a CAGR of 15 percent over 2016-2021. The growth would be primarily driven by increase in the demand for value-added milk products. Value-added products are expected to grow by 20 percent. Paneer represents one of the soft varieties of cheese family and is used in culinary dishes/snacks. About 5 percent of milk produced in India is converted into paneer. The paneer market in India grew at a CAGR of 13.3 percent during 2011-2018. The long-term outlook of Indian dairy sector is favorable on account of increasing population, increase in per capita consumption, increase in expenditure on package food, brand awareness, urbanization & increase in nuclear families and government support.
